I think that you're right on the money with the simplification of production. If one supplier can run one component full out vs switching between two that is definitely preferred these days even if piece price is slightly higher.

I think that has changed along with the SmarKey. Mine is not a Premium but still has it and there is no line item option for it.

Just wanted to post an update on this. I’m actually sitting at the Toyota dealer now and they told me there is a TSB for the squeak and they had go to in and lubricate some bushings. Makes me feel better that it is a known issue.

Replying to an old comment here but yeah it has never done it since. I also have never gone through that type of carwash again. Must be that water gets somewhere it shouldn't and if you don't get it dried off you end up with the rust described above that take some force to break loose.
