Never had any problems with the 4ton come-along. I agree there are probably safer options out there; but it actually works quite well with my X. I also agree that straps with sewn loops are better and safer than steel hooks. They are the only ones I'll use. And I always use a safe recovery...

A cheaper option is to just carry a 4-ton come-along in the truck along with a couple of tow straps. Works well for my X when the sh!t gets nasty.

So when you got rid of your stock tires, were you able to trade them in or sell them? If I end up buying a new 4runner, I would like to do the same. Just wondering what options are out there.

I'm in the market for a 5th gen 4runner (trail edition). But I need to know how wide the cross bars are on the roof rack. This will determine if my canoe can be carried with the factory rack or not. If someone can measure the width of the cross bars, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
