Hello from boston, just got my first car

Hi everyone,

Im 16 and my dad just got me a 3rd generation 2001 4Runner from work for free. Im thrilled to have it, its in excellent condition with about 189,000 miles on it, im taking my permit exam on monday and getting my full license in January. Any tips or advice with the truck? Im interested in off-roading and doing some mods, (grill guard, lift kit, .etc)

Thanks,

Jesse

congrats! my advice is to take your time and do it right the first time. i've built alot of trucks from spacer/body lifts to ifs lifts to axle swaps and i'll admit that there's still a ton of info out there that i have yet to learn. which is why i'm here. its a great community with alot of knowledgable guys on here that can point you in the right direction with whatever you decide to do to your runner. good luck with your build and don't be afraid to ask even the simplest question if you're not sure about something.

welcome aboard!!!

Congrats and Welcome ! ! !

Ask if maintenance records were kept. Be good to know what has been done. From fluid changes to timing belt, its good information.

Thanks everyone! Im really exited to be on the road... I agree it is very important to make sure things are done right the first time, when I decide to do my first mod I will make sure to ask if I have any questions, but I will enjoy my runner as it is for a while.... My dad used to use the car where he works so we are very familiar with the maintenance records, The paint on the exterior is in great shape, just a few minor scratches, The only problem I have had is the AC system, I had to give it a recharge a week or two ago but I suspect a freon leak, Also one thing I really am having trouble with is the hood, The cable is severd at some point so it dosent latch properly, right now the safety hood release is keeping it shut I tried WD-40 on the latch to lubricate the cable but it dosent do any good, before I bring it on the highway I really want to make sure it is shut correctly any advice? will I need to bring it to a repair shop?
