Welcome to T4R.ORG Josh! Once u get ur blown head gasket(BHG) fixed, get some headers for ur 3.0. This will eliminate the cause of BHG which is the exhaust crossover pipe that routes behind the cylinder heads. Once u get rid of it, the 3.0 is just as reliable as any Toyota and u will gain some HP to boot. Good luck!

Thats some awesome news. Thanks man. What headers are out there for these things? I have a friend that builds turbo manifolds. He can build me a set to fit I would think. He would probably build some to sell if they work good.

Welcome! I'm from the same area as you, but don't really know much about 2nd gens. Be glad to help as much as I can though. I work in Rock Hill and live in Lake Wylie. Have lived in Clover, Fort Mill, and Rock Hill.

Cool. I bought this runner from a guy in clover. I come down to rock hill every Friday after work. I usually go fishing. Been trying a few different places. Im thinking about doing a 3.4 swap in my runner. But im not sure yet. I wad a honda guy but with how everything is getting stollen and all crap goin on in the honda game I decided to move over to the 4x4 world.

You should look into a 4.7 2UZ swap. I know there's a guy here (singtoe) in NC that did one on a 3rd gen. Don't know how hard it would be on a 2nd. I love that motor though. There was a guy in Clover that put a 4BT Cummins Turbo Diesel in a monster 2nd gen.
I still got love for Hondas. I owned a 98 Accord and it was a great car and my wife currently drives an 08 Accord. Have owned a Subaru and Nissan as well. Loved the Subie, will never own another Nissan.

Is the 4.7 the v8 that comes in the big Tacoma? I bet that is pricey. Im really wantin to do anything to big and crazy. This is more or less just a back up/ take to mnt or river vehicle. But I do like a challenge on stuff. I still love hondas but im done building them. I drive a 04 acura tl that has a little work done. Nothing crazy. Its my dd and it gets decent mpg. Are there many 4runner people around in our area ?

The 4.7 came in the 1st gen Tundras, Sequoias, Land Cruisers and some 4th gen 4Runners like mine. Toyota has never offered a V8 in a Tacoma AFAIK. It's also available in the Lexus GX and older LX and as an option on the 2nd Gen Tundras.
I love those 3rd Gen TL's. They're my favorite. I wanted one for so long, but couldn't really afford one at the time I was looking and ended buying a 350Z instead. This was like back in 05. Was between a TL or a G35 coupe, but could only bring myself to afford the Nissan.
There seems to be more 4R people popping up all the time. I've met some of my closest friends here on the forum. 4Runner people seem to be really good folks.

I see. Where on the motors can I find what it is? You know on hondas they are stamped right on the block.
And the 3g tl is my favorite too. Iv wanted one ever since they cam out. Im not a big Nissan fan. Never have been. I looked at a few g35 4 doors and 2 doors when I was lookin to get a newer car. But the tl was my first choice. I have a 6speed with navigation in the darker silver/grey color. I love the car.
And thats good to hear. Iv met most of my best friends from the honda game. And now most of us are gettin out of it.
If you want ill send you my number and we could get up some time. Id like to see your 4runner and I can show you my tl.

Sure man, PM me your number and I'll send you a text so you can have mine. As far as identifying your engine. That model only came with a choice between a 2.4L 4Cyl (22RE) or a 3.0L V6 (3VZ) so it should be easy to tell what you've got. I'm not sure about on your model, but there should be plenty of identifiers on the vehicle.

Oh... Yeah, I'm not quite sure off the top of my head where it is, but I'm certain it's cast on the block. Probably in multiple locations. the 2UZ has since been replaced by a 4.6L 1UR, which has chain driven cams vs the belt driven ones.

Doug Thorley makes the best headers for the 3.0. They are a bit pricey, but it solves a big problem inherent in these engines. Maybe ur buddy could look at the DT headers and copy them. I found them on Amazon for around $600, not cheap but excellent quality.
