I've been offroading for about 15 years, mostly in Jeeps. Just sold my 97 Wrangler (1tons, 40s, etc.) and want something bigger for my family. I am looking to buy a 3rd gen 4Runner for my trail/camping rig. My plan is to SAS the 4Runner, 35s, lockers, sliders, bumpers, that's about it.

I've been searching craigslist and the forums for a good candidate to start with. I want something clean and unmolested, unless it was done right.

Can you guys please explain to me how do people come up with prices for their rigs for sale? I looked on kbb and edmunds to get a baseline and 2000 SR5 4WD in Very Good condition prices out at about $4000. Problem is, there are no 4Runners available at that price. I looked at a rough 99 yesterday and the guy wanted $5500. $7000 seems to be a median price. I understand supply/demand and I'm willing to pay a fair price for a good 4Runner, just wanted to make sure I'm not overpaying.

on ur zip to some degree, plus sellers know the potential of the vehicle. In my area a 2000 sr5 4wd in 'good' condition (not excellent) gets $3,798 (wholesale) $4,593 (person to person) $6,026 (retail).

It is tough to find one under person to person price but possible - found mine between wholesale and person to person w/177k-no issues then or now. ebay is one possible source but you need to be familiar with that process and have lots of pics to review or be lucky enough its nearby. Patience is main requirement on your part, wait for it...

IME, these trucks always run at least 25% over KBB. If you wait for a 4Runner priced at KBB, be ready to wait a while and then be ready to call the guy in five minutes or it'll be gone.
