Same with me! I drove a 2013 Tacoma SR5 and loved it. Never had any issues with it and it still runs like new. I couldn't let it go when I bought my 4runner so now my brother drives my Tacoma, which means I can still see it when he visits. But I am in love with my 4runner and can't wait to take it on adventures.

Hey everyone, new poster to this group but have been searching the site extensively. Had a 3rd gen 4runner that I sold for an 06 Landcruiser, just recently sold that for a 20 TRDP. Needless to say, i've been a Toyota fan for a long time. Haven't done anything crazy as of yet, just black emblem overlays and canvasback for a good chunk of the interior which I highly recommend.

Hows the transition from the 100 Series LC to the 5th gen? Love my buddies LC for long road trips. But does feel dated compared to my '18 4R.

The 5th gen rides and looks way better to me but the 100 was 14 years old lol. The space to stretch out for long road trips will be missed, but yeah, definitely was dated. I never liked how difficult it was to upgrade the nav/radio because the heat and A/C controls were integrated. Bottom line, the 100 will be missed for sure but the 5th gen makes it very easy to move on lol.

Also, if anyone has any pointers on how I should go about making this a capable overlander on the cheap, I am open to suggestions.[/QUOTE]
Seems like a fun project. Here in NY if I somehow managed to get it to an inspection station without getting pulled over and impounded with all those missing parts there is no way they would have inspected it! Needs lights at least lol

Dreamed of a 200 LC. But with the price of the 200 it's pretty hard to make the jump. 5Gen is a good way to go. Welcome!

Good thing the resale values are awesome with these, might make it a bit easier to trade into the 200 at some point for those who are interested. Thanks Teamdonde!!

Yeah, it was pretty sketch, but I drove it during daylight hours and used hand signals for turning like in the model T days. Luckily in Arizona we don't have actual inspection stations. If your vehicle is something like 98 or newer all they do is plug a tester into your OBD port and run some emissions test, then they take off your fuel cap and check for pressure or something. I literally asked the emissions person if he had seen any other hot messes like mine roll up. He laughed and said he had seen far worse.
In regards to the headlight missing, I figured vintage cars don't have running lights either so as long as I didn't drive it at night, what's the difference? Actually had a cop tailing me after I left the emissions testing station. I know he was running my temp plate. He didn't pull me over though. Probably had better things to do.
I have to drive it again next Saturday to see if we can straighten the core support. All the wiring harnesses and cannon plugs are intact so during the week I'm going to try and figure out a way to mount some temporary lights. Just in case I have to drive it back home after dark.

New Check-in w/ 1996 T4R limited
Hello everybody. Finally pulled the trigger...I was looking at all your threads for years before I finally bought one. Thank you for all the helpful info.
Couple of questions: 1. Changing auto tranny filter/solenoid with the fluid? What is the normal periodicity for changing the filter and can anyone recommend a solid kit?
2. Changing to 4.88 gears (3.4l 4x4 with electronic diff lock). Can someone point me to the best thread for research?
Thanks again for all you do.

Intro1
Hello I'm brand new to the forum but have been lurking for a couple weeks. I just bought my first 4runner! I couldn't resist at the low price of 400$ It's a 3rd gen! I worked at a Toyota dealership in the past and fell in love with these. Its may be a total POS but its mine! Replacing my old winter beater (2002 4x4 escape) was a must. Here in Michigan I was lucky to find one so cheap with slim to no rust. She definitely needs some love but is in good hands. Working on her has been quite a cathartic change of pace seeing as I'm an Audi/Vw tech by day. I own a total of 5 cars right now. Soon to be 4 when I get the 3rd gen on the road and scrap the escape.
Bought with a flashing CEL, no power steering, abs light and air bag light on. After a 20min look over and an asking price to reflect that.
First repairs and maintenance were:
Spark plugs, air filter , fuel filter, turn steer tubes, and the r/r wheel speed sensor wire repair.
I replaced the miss matched tires with a set of matching general grabbers from my garage (I know)
I don't plan to make it perfect but I'm gonna keep this thing out of the junk yard. With only 180k on the clock
I present my ugly 400$ 2000 5vz-fe limited 4runner

Hello all, just started poking around a bit more. All my contributions thus far have been to the fuel tank relocation thread:
Fuel Tank Relocation (and new Rear Bumper design)
and I just realized why I can't start a build thread. I have done many modifications to two 4runners in the last few years. One of which my friend sold yesterday so I'm waiting to see it pop up on here. If you see a red 97 with a black hood, manual transmission, tube bumpers, a marlin doubler, supercharger, kings, etc... let me know somehow. I know it very well!
My 97 already has a build thread from a previous owner but there appears to be some gaps between what was done when he sold it and what was done when I bought it. I dont want to hijack his thread so ill wait till my posts are up and throw it out there for all to see.

Hello everyone. I am not sure if there is a thread about this kind of thing but I also need to increase my posting count, so here it goes:
I have a 70 pound dog that I take camping and I used to put all the gear in the bed of my Tacoma but now I have a 4Runner. Does anyone have any pictures they can show me with your gear in the 4Runner while still keeping your pets safe? It also may include having the back seats down but I am open to suggestions.
Here is a picture of my troublemaker.
Thank you!

Looking at something long term....reliability is a concern.
I have no issues with my Jeep @ 29k but i am watching a few things that i know are typical issues.....like radiator leaks.
I have learned one thing...If I pull the trigger I want the Off Road version not the Premium or the Pro.
Probably buy my son an older model in 3 years. So I would like to get familiar with them. I have not even test driven a 4runner yet.
That is next.
Mainly I am not interested in paying a mechanic to fix my vehicle...i can handle 80% of the repairs on my Jeep so that saves me money in the long run.
However....if I am not repairing my vehicle at all that also saves me money. Again I have had zero issue thus far but I am not naive enough to think that will be the case forever.
My attraction to the 4Runner. Longevity.
