Hi All,

Just joined this after buying a 2000 4Runner SR5 yesterday. Gorgeous but very bittersweet. On the drive home, about 2.5 hours into it the tranny gave in. So now i have a car sat in a car park 5 hours from my house. Came here looking for advice/tips from others who have had the same or similar.

1st mechanic who came to the side of the road said a tranny fluid flush should do the trick. Took it to a shop that could do it, explained the symptoms to them. Which are:

-Test driving and the 1st few hours driving along all good. No slip, nothing. 2 hours in the A/T oil temp light came on for about 30 seconds. Then i stopped for fuel and it went off. Carried on. Light stayed off.

-Me and my pal swapped after fueling up and he said it was having issues shifting out of 1st. We stopped, you could smell burning clutch kinda smell. I got in and we limped it to the next exit of the highway. It did shift out of 1st but you could tell it was slipping. By the time we stopped i had basically lost 1st and reverse. Turned it off for 10 mins, got in again and it was as if nothing was wrong. Called a mechanic to have a look. Said the oil needs a flush. It was super burnt.

- Limped it to a shop 5 mins away who could do it. Again slipping sometimes. Explained this to them and they said it seems like it's way past the flush stage. Basically a new tranny or a rebuild. Probably the only thing giving it friction to move is the thickness of the oil with the broken down fiber pates.

- So that's where I'm at. I'm weighing up fixing it up and getting it going or cutting my losses and selling it without a working tranny. I already knew i was going to do the timing belt, water pump, the other belts, struts and all fluids replaced, as there was no history for the car. Only 265,000 on it, but i feel like it was very neglected. Paid 3850 for it, and all that above will basically match the price of the car.

So any tips from someone who has been through this would be great. Current plan is to take it to a mechanic to give it a once over and see if there is anything else it needs. If they add much more to the list i'll probably just have to flog it as is, because I don't have the funds to plough 10K into this thing. This was my 'reliable' option, but i guess it's only as reliable as the previous owner(s).

Anyone had a refurbished tranny put in? How much should I be looking at, roughly? Flirted with getting a kit and doing it myself but it's a way bigger job than I want right now. I'll just start with the smaller stuff.

Thanks!
Dan

Love that 4Runner. Ever since I was like 14 I've always wanted one of the newer ones like you got.

Security System Problems

I've got a 95 with the 3 slow and 4wd and it won't start. My instructor says it could be because the security system is disconnected and that they didn't do it the "correct way." If anyone has any info it'd be greatly appreciated.

Brand new 4Runner owner here!

After months of shopping for a 4Runner, I accidentally lucked into one while buying something off FB marketplace. 2004 SR5, Black 220K. Great shape, but needs a few minor items (like a new tailgate). The lexus owner forums served me well with my 1995 SC300, and I'm looking forward to learning more about my new truck here!

Posting, new to this forum. How posts before I can start a thread?
Looking for info for my daughters 96 4runner, 3.4. She currently has code P0301, we just did coil packs, wires, and plugs. I am assuming this is a bad injector.
My question is are there brands of injectors to stay away from? Are Amazon and Ebay ones junk? or should I just go with something from RockAuto?
Looking forward to the good type of results I have had on other forums.
Thanks.

Had to get a membership for couple of reasons:

1. I'm jumping out of the Audi Q5 world and into Toyota for the first time; I did a bit of Jeep work back in the day but am thoroughly over that, and as much as I love and miss my Audi she was a maintenance hog and was getting old. I snagged a 2014 SR5 Premium for well under book and will be picking it up later this week then driving back to Arizona (~18 hours). I'm keeping it COMPLETELY stock for the return trip....except for all-LASFIT LED exterior lighting all around (man, wish I'd considered them earlier - fit the whole truck for just 1.5x what the GTR low beam bulbs ran on my Q5), the Cornfed 1" level, and black Spidertrax 1.25" wheel spacers, and a bug guard. COMPLETELY STOCK! The existing tires have about 15k miles left, maybe, so I'll be doing wheels and tires this summer and will consider suspension with that. There's just too much to be done.

2. This forum has already helped me sort a few things before I take delivery, including a brief overview of the Cornfed 1" level. I talked with David on the phone and he was awesome - they'll be waiting for me when I hit town.

I've spent years modding various vehicles so none of this is new; just new on the T4R. Unfortunately there won't be much money saved; while the Audi is more expensive to service, maintain, and mod, the T4R - like the Jeep - has so much aftermarket support that there's no end to the mods. C'est la vie.

I've been lurking this forum for a couple months now as I've contemplated the T4R and looked into the possibilities with it; can't wait to contribute in full.

Hello everybody! Not a new member, been lurking around for a while, but finally becoming active. I have a 2005 Limited, first T4R after having two Tundras. I’ve had it for a couple years now and loving it. I’m finally about to start up the mods so hopefully I’ll be posting them soon!
