3rd Gen Runner from the Grave
Hey what's up guys! Been a member of the forum for a couple of months now, but just getting to making a post now. Find myself way too busy but I love my car and the info from this forum, so figured I finally stop hiding in the bushes and get involved. Been strolling through the threads in this forum for a couple of years since I bought my '99 3rd gen back in the summer of 2018, and the info in here is truly amazing, so thanks for all of that... I look forward to conversing and getting future questions asked!
Anyway... to the interesting stuff. I bought my truck right after graduating high school with the hopes of turning it into a sweet overlanding rig to take on some eventual gnarly trips. That process has come along a lot slower than anticipated cuz I'm currently a college student, and that has been taking loads of my time as has making money to be able to pay for ludicrously expensive schools these days.
So my 4runnner is a '99 SR5 with about 170000 miles on the clock (bought her with ~150000 mi) and a manual transmission. I'm the 3rd owner I think but I'm not totally positive and this thing has been through the ringer, but still looks great. It's survived a rollover accident and still rolls true without a bent frame or any major issues. A true testament to how much of beasts these things are. Well it does have a few funky electrical quirks and slightly crooked body panels, but besides that... its extremely clean as you'll see in the photos below. Since owning the thing, I've kept up with general maintenance and replaced the clutch. Vastly restored the power from what it had lost over the years and got the MPGs up to about 19, so pretty stoked on that. I've thrown on some cooper discoverer stt pros (265/75 r16), which are pretty awesome so far but here on the east coast, its been tough to find places to really test them out. I've also built out the back for car camping, and I'm so happy with how functional and useful it's been for that.
So been battling a broken fuel gauge and some squeaky suspension for the past year plus, and finally I've gotten to the point where I don't want to deal with it anymore. So I'm gonna fix both in the coming weeks. Doing a full suspension overhaul (upper + lower ball joints, control arms likely, shocks, coils, etc.) and gonna take the opportunity to lift it a bit. I'm thinking 2-3 inches, but not positive. I'd like to hold up to a bit of added load too. Pretty much a newb with regards to suspension, so I would absolutely love some pointers as to what I should get/recommendations/tips on how to make it go smoothly/links to threads! Just let me know
Here's some photos of my baby, hope you enjoy...
