For some background, I am not generally a "car person" so this sort of new ground for me. I am however a degree'd EE and I have worked on CAN Bus systems before so I'm not completely clueless (at least I don't think I am).

Alternatively if anyone has done similar work on their 2020 please lets chat.

I figure since I have to spam this thread anyway might as well post what I want to do.

First I want to disable the toyota SOS thing. I know it is a "service" and you can "disable" at anytime but I mean I want to physically disable it. That I is I would like to, in theory, cut any wires to it and crimp male/female headers to the wires so that it could be reconnected in factory esque config but I can just leave it unconnected.

I also want to disable the cellular call feature. Though I am not sure if that is just blue tooth pairing with your phone. In anycase there is clearly some sort of celluar system for the SOS call.

I also want to disable the onboard GPS. I don't use the map feature there ever and I have my own gps modules I use for tracking things (little arduino or PIC32 projects). I imagine this and the blue tooth phone pairing call system are run through the radio and entertainment node on the CAN bus so maybe a can kill a few birds with one stone.

I would also like to replace, or provide an alternative to, the key fob ignitions. There is a manual key in the key fob for opening doors and there appears to be a passive data strip in the key so you can technically start the car if the battery is dead by holding the key near the push button - but I'd just like to make an attachable switch and maybe create my own keyhole to work with the emergency key so I can have a manual ignition as a back up.

My goal with all of this is to do it in a clean and minimally intrusive way so that I can effectively restore to near factory conditions if I so desire. Hence this idea of cutting wires and crimping headers on them so I can plug them together if desired.

The only physical additions I would make at the moment is perhaps a plow/front grill with tow cable and some jerry can racks. Though that seems easy enough to find.

I will say that one thing I find annoying is that the dashboard display puts a lot of standard driving data on different screens which requires you flip between. I don't know if that display system will be easy to replace since its tied directly into system ECU's on the bus.

New here, hope I haven't messed up yet :)

Hello from Austin, TX!

I'm brand new to the forum and also the brand new owner of a 1999 4Runner Limited. It has about 130k miles on it and runs pretty good from what I can tell.

Thanks to all the previous members here for sharing such a wealth of information. I have plenty of stuff to learn about the 4runner as well as how to navigate the forum here. I hope I don't annoy too many people.

First job is to get the hood cleaned up and a few interior issues like the torn leather seats. I'll start off by going to the junk yard tomorrow first thing in the morning to see if I can find any goodies.

I look forward to sharing what I learn but right now its mostly going to be learning from you guys/gals.

I picked it up with only the 2H working on it. The 4H and 4L do not engage. I have been researching possible fixes. Yet to try anything yet. Looking to find folks who have had experience with this issue and any workaround fixes.

2007 V6 4Runner

Just purchased a 07 V6 4x4 100K very clean no rust runs great however 4wheel drive is not functioning. I will most likely take this one out to Colorado. Looking for some shared knowledge. Thanks in advance. Rick

Bought my 97 4 Runner almost a year ago. Just purchased my first mod tonight. Front and rear bumpers and an OME lift to support the bumpers. Iíll post a build thread when everything gets here.

Potential 4runner owner -

Hey everyone, I'm not actually an owner yet. I am basically just upping my post count to 15 so that I can ask for some helpful hits in the 3rd gen forum.

I've been into Jeeps for the last 10 years or so, and have done my share of builds...I've been hunting for an FJ(Z) for like 2 years, but haven't found an affordable one that isn't rusted to the core so I've decided to get in the market for a 3rd gen 4runner. I've got a lead on a 5speed with 120,5xx on the clock for a very very reasonable price and am interested in any and all comments folks my have on the vehicle or on 4runners in general.

Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone! Glad I joined, got my dream Gobi rack off the classifieds instead of having to wait months on end! This is going to be a slippery slope haha
