Newb with '96. Mysterious repeating noise

Hello. I just acquired a '96 4Runner. I noticed a repeating mid-range noise coming from the under the hood. The noise only seems to happen during the day, even when the car hasn't been started for a couple of weeks. It's like a short pulse every few seconds all day long. Seems to go off at night. Very strange. Any possible explanations? Thank you in advance

new to the club

Hey folks

I've been gifted my late father's much loved (and very original) 1998 4Runner SR5. I've been obsessed with this forum with all the photos and helpful tips. I'm afraid that I'm getting the mod bug and have started a long list of upgrades, looking forward to getting started. If I love this car half as much as he did we'll see 400K for sure.

Haven't figured out how to post photos yet but .... one thing at a time

hey all, just recently bought a 2006 4runner here and I might have bought one with a bad HG. Looking to get more advice, hoping to meet post requirements soon.

Hi everyone!

Just lurking around to find new and improved ways to make my old beater even more of a monument to my hubris. Particularly what parts aren't strictly necessary and can be cut if needed. Will eventually start turning the old girl into an off-roader

what's the first step?

brought it home, getting it checked out again. Now, what's next to get ready to leave pavement?

I signed up to look for specific trouble-shooting dialog for a puzzle truck. There are discussions that lean toward my puzzles, but they are a couple of years old, and it seems rude to re-start an old discussion.

1999 4Runner SR5 4WD 3.4L V6 Auto trans with "issues". I don't want to drive it to a shop until I get it running OK for that distance.

Maybe there are scanner phone apps that can see farther into the ecu than my scangauge does. I am thinking that it may not or can not see the fuel trims or the a/f ratios, although ..... etc.

this Runner might wind up a a hobby with a repower so I can use it for transportation. IDK

Regards,
M

You've come to the right place, endless ideas on how to spend lots of money on upgrading just about everything!

new bee

I finally discovered today that a 1999 TOYOTA 4RUNNER SR5 4WD 3.4L V6 Auto Fed single cat will not and cannot have an A/F sensor ahead of the cat. Even though one Denso page said it could, and the other page said it cannot. I have a -4162 to replace the one I removed, because I got a Bank 1 is lean code.

I think the A/F sensor would make sense for the monitoring gauge in the scangauge. Maybe some one knows if or how an added A/F Ratio gauge might be added? I suppose just get a separate one with it's own wiring that bypasses the ECU... but none of that will help RunRun start running right.

ALSO, I keep looking for some sort of serial number in a visible spot on the block. That's something that keeps me awake at night and keeps my hair greasy.

IDK

Really

:)

I FOUND IT ! the engine serial appears on the block behind or under the alternator. I'll check to see if it will show up to an inspection mirror.

after that I found a toyota page on some website that details how to splice an electrical connector onto a sensor pigtail. so maybe i could splice the upstream connector to the ECU with the correct connector to accept the stock 234-9003 S1, and then have A/F Ratios IFFFFF, (BIG if), the ecu can read it. otherwise it could fall to an ecu swap, the way engine swappers do it.

IDK,
M
