Hi I’m new here
My name is Tyler, and I’m from Orem Utah. I’ve got a 97 sr5 5speed. I got it by trading my 02 w55 is300 that was slammed on bc coils. I often miss having such an amazing car, and in such a rare spec, but I love my 4Runner and I can drive over speed bumps now.

I have read a little about the "rear end" of a 4 Runner, that in fact repairs run on a continuum and if "everything" needs to be done then the entire rear-end can cost up to $4,000. I want to know what the "entire rear end" includes? And should I get more than one estimate. My Father was a mechanic and had his own shop, highly respected and conscientious, my brother learned from him and did a lot of his own work. The story is he paid someone $2,000 to fix the rear end but.....it's not fixed. Hence, his friend after his death had the estimate done. How do I know this estimate is correct? Where is the best place to get a complete and thorough assessment of what is needed?
Elementary questions I know...but you guys that have it going on with your own 4Runners, I could use your help. Thanks

Hey man, sorry about your brother. But as far as your 4Runner goes, if it’s just the differential that needs to be replaced, prices will vary from around 150-500 bucks depending if it’s got the e locker and what gearing you need. My guess is that they’re seriously trying to rip you off, because the entire rear end doesn’t typically go bad. If I were to pay a shop to replace a rear diff I wouldn’t pay more that 300ish in labor.

2004 4RUNNER ALMOST 500,000 MILES and a Question for Y'all
I guess I'm the newest guy here for the moment. Hello.
I got on here in hopes of posting a new thread and receiving opinions, but have just seen the 15 post minimum. I understand that, but I'll post something here and see what comes back since the reason I joined was to receive advice today on my issue.
I've got a 2004 4Runner V6. 467K miles on it. It's been great. I did my own head gasket job on it two years ago, but I believe I made the mistake of checking for flat surface on my own and did not take the heads in to a machine shop. In the last two weeks white smoke, Cylinder 3 misfire, misfire at start up then smooths out, and in extremely cold weather twice now I've had to crank it 15 to 20 times before it started roughly but then cleared up and ran great.
I just scoped all 6 cylinders. Cylinder 3 has antifreeze seeping in (no small leak), and signs of antifreeze in cylinder 4, and possibly also cylinder 6.
Here's my Question: Would you fix it again or use gasket sealer for now (I know sealer may last a decent while or no longer than a week)? I was hoping to take it to 500K and beyond, or at least have it until car prices dropped over this next year. Can't make up my mind. Thoughts?

New Guy
I just signed up this weekend, which I did because at some point in '23 or '24, I am probably going to need to replace my current vehicle, and all things considered, I think a 4Runner is probably my best option.
So, I figured it might be wise to learn more about them, because at the moment I know just enough to screw it up thoroughly.
I've lived a number of different places around the world; currently I'm in NE Pennsylvania, a few miles northeast of Wilkes-Barre.
So... Hello.

New user here and quick question... this forum is almost unusable due to the adds and pop ups that incessantly interupt the user experience. Is there a way to disable those?
Thanks!

New Guy here
New to the this forum, but not to off-roading.
Recently purchased my first 4Runner and I wish I bought one sooner. I love my 4Rinner.
Looking to lift it due to it having KDSS and front sitting super low.
Looking forward to meeting new people and hopefully adding some of my knowledge to this forum.
-Dan

New to the forum. Here's my 01 4Runner. A huge fan of the Hilux Surfs so here's my attempt to make my rig somewhat look like it. So far what I've done to it: 2.5" lift Bilstein 5100s with OEM springs F&R, BFKO2's 265/75R16's, OEM Hilux rear spoiler, emblem, fender side markers, window visors. RSR exhaust tip, Hella 500 driving lights, Projector headlights, rear fog light, universal fender mirror, and Satoshi grill.
