3rd gen

Hi I'm new to this forum, but sadly I'm selling my 2002. Good news is I bought a new 2022 taco with the off road package and a stick.

Another FNG

Hello all from the JDM side of the world!

I've been a member for almost a year, but I'm a habitual lurker and tend not to post much, no matter the platform.

I picked up my 3rd Gen in March 2022 and have slowly been getting it to mechanical baseline, while adding a few minor upgrades along the way. It is a 1996 Hilux Surf SSRX, 2.7L 3RZ-FE, A340F Auto trans with A04A axle(4.30 ratio), 4x4 without e-locker. I purchased it from a small dealer in Atsugi, Japan with 170,700km. It did not come with any maintenance or repair history, other than the dealer saying it was a clean title with no accidents, but there's no evidence of any damage besides some minor paint scuffing. The frame is about 95% rust free, and 99% of what is there is just surface rust.

I am stationed in Tokyo with the military, which is where I discovered just what a Hilux Surf is. The goal is to have a very reliable daily driver for myself for a couple years, then for my wife to use when we return to the States until we can upgrade her to a more modern DD. Then, I will work on turning this Surf into a very capable overland-plus rig. I don't anticipate doing any serious technical wheeling, but I want to be able to keep up with my brother's Gladiator overlander.

Progress so far:
Removed chin bumper and side steps; replaced radiator, hoses, water pump, and thermostat (all OEM); replaced LBJs and tie-rod ends (OEM); TBU (199/13WE); center console swap for cup holders; spark plugs/wires, and checked valve spacing; replaced driver's seat cushion and seat belt (I think I found the last right side OEM seatbelt available online...); changed all sway bar and stearing rack bushings; changed orange signal lenses for clear; installed back-up camera and new radio head; added Spiker Engr hood struts, and replaced rear hatch struts; upgraded to Honda washer spray nozzles; added rear diff breather extension; painted the wheels.

Immediate to-do list:
Rear axle seals appear to be leaking, as well as the inner CV boots and upper ball joints; I'm going to do the UCA and LCA bushings at the same time, and I have a Bilstein OME Stage 1 lift from YotaMafia waiting to go in (1.5-2" w/ 880/906 springs); new muffler and Cali-spec exhaust manifold/header; LED lights everywhere.

Long-term to-do/Wants list:
Eventually I want some FN Five Stars and the larger tundra brakes; New speakers w/ sound matting, off-road lights, Sherpa Matterhorn roof rack; GMRS radio; ARB rear locker and on-board air with tank; high-clearance bumpers and winch; rock rails/sliders; snorkel; long-travel front and axle swap rear (wider to match long travel, and with disc brakes)? F-150 fuel tank swap, maybe?

I'm sure there something I'm forgetting, but I'm having fun learning and tinkering and wrenching on this thing, and it's a blast to drive around the tiny Japanese streets in Western Tokyo.

Hello from the Central Valley.

hey everyone, I'm new but I have been reading the forums for a couple of years now. I own a 1989 4runner for about 9 years but it's been out of commission since 2019 so just under 4-5 years. I took that Truck on many adventures up and down California. she broke down at cal state Eastbay from a blown head gasket ill drop a link to the video if anyone wants to check it out. I have plans to bring her back to life in the coming year and plan to be on here quite often.
nice to meet yall and have a great day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOMu2nlJlys&feature=youtu.be

Trd or ‘22

Just bought a ‘22 TRD OR with 50K miles on it. It was a rental car before me. I’ve had good luck with rentals in the past, and I’m having a local off-road/outfitter shop inspect it (they specialize in Toyota).

I spend much of the summer in Colorado. Last two summers, I have rented a wrangler with 35s, and I’ve really enjoyed accessing places that my dad’s old Honda pilot couldn’t get me to. I needed a capable OR vehicle that would fit two big dogs in the back and two kids in the 2nd row, so the wranglers and grand cherokees weren’t going to cut it.

Off-roading I do….. honestly the most treacherous is a set of gnarly switchbacks to get up over a ridge behind my cabin. The Pilot couldn’t do it, but the rented Wrangler could. Other than that, there are some roads to high-mountain lakes that have lots of rocks and moguls. I don’t really care about driving fast, prefer to go slow. I don’t have much need to off-road in the snow, and the mud doesn’t sound so great for me.

I’m sure my stock rig will probably be fine, but I would love a good set of tires and a little more ground clearance.

New here - about to buy my first 4Runner - maybe

New here. Looking for a third car for family. Settled on a 4Runner or Land Cruiser. Driven several rental SR5s and today drove a lightly used TRD Pro.

checking out two used Land Cruisers locally tomorrow. I do have a question, though.

Any good dealers y'all recommend? I'm in San Antonio and all of our local dealers are just awful. I've always driven Ford trucks for our ranch. I buy my trucks from a dealer in Corpus Christi. But for a Ford truck, a well known dealer that doesn't do the market adjustment junk and offers stellar experience is Granger Ford in Iowa. I've read loads of folks that order a Super Duty from Granger at invoice or 1% over (where dealers across the nation still do the ADM stuff). Lots of folks post about flying in, Granger picking them up, they're done in an hour and on the road home. Even long trips to Florida, Washington, California, etc.

Curious if you all have a solid recommendation for a fair Toyota dealer that doesn't play shenanigan games. I know the whole supply/demand. I follow it all w/ Ford and know the whole deal with car prices across the board. But I also know there are still dealers that offer good service and even if I hop on a plane, I'd rather buy from someone good/fair vs the less-than-average dealers in the greater San Antonio/Austin area. Many thanks in advance for any direction.

In mourning for my 1997 4Runner

Hi, All:

I live in California. I handed off my 1997 4Runner SR5, 4WD with 498,000 miles on it to my son to take to college in Florida.

Last month, a driver turned left in front of him at an intersection and hit him head on. My son and his girlfriend didn't get injured, but the car was a total loss. The airbags deployed and the seatbelts held after these last 26 years.

I never had a serious mechanical problem with the car over its entire half million mile lifetime.

It's been a month and I still weep when I think about it.

He wants another 4Runner, so we're looking for used. I have questions, but I can't post in this forum even though my account has been registered/verified. What all are the criteria before I can post a question?

Thanks.

Hello all!

I have been lurking for a while now. My wife and I are looking to get a used 4Runner in the next couple of weeks. It is a 2021 and has a little over 1500 on it. We will be looking at the rig on Thursday or Friday when she is off work. Hopefully it is still there. She's wanted a 4Runner for a long time so I do hope that rig will still be there.

Anyway, I just wanted to stop by and say hello!

Regards,

Zacarias

Hi everyone, I just joined the forum recently and wanted to introduce myself. I moved from PA to CA and picked up a '97 4runner. Its 2WD with around 300k miles. Needs a new clutch and U-joints but other than that its in decent mechanical shape, has a rust free frame and body. Looking forward to learning about 4runners in general and maybe meeting some people out here in CA. Im an electrical engineer so if anyone has electrical questions let me know. Also have had VWs, and BMWs in the past. -
