Hello all from the JDM side of the world!
I've been a member for almost a year, but I'm a habitual lurker and tend not to post much, no matter the platform.
I picked up my 3rd Gen in March 2022 and have slowly been getting it to mechanical baseline, while adding a few minor upgrades along the way. It is a 1996 Hilux Surf SSRX, 2.7L 3RZ-FE, A340F Auto trans with A04A axle(4.30 ratio), 4x4 without e-locker. I purchased it from a small dealer in Atsugi, Japan with 170,700km. It did not come with any maintenance or repair history, other than the dealer saying it was a clean title with no accidents, but there's no evidence of any damage besides some minor paint scuffing. The frame is about 95% rust free, and 99% of what is there is just surface rust.
I am stationed in Tokyo with the military, which is where I discovered just what a Hilux Surf is. The goal is to have a very reliable daily driver for myself for a couple years, then for my wife to use when we return to the States until we can upgrade her to a more modern DD. Then, I will work on turning this Surf into a very capable overland-plus rig. I don't anticipate doing any serious technical wheeling, but I want to be able to keep up with my brother's Gladiator overlander.
Progress so far:
Removed chin bumper and side steps; replaced radiator, hoses, water pump, and thermostat (all OEM); replaced LBJs and tie-rod ends (OEM); TBU (199/13WE); center console swap for cup holders; spark plugs/wires, and checked valve spacing; replaced driver's seat cushion and seat belt (I think I found the last right side OEM seatbelt available online...); changed all sway bar and stearing rack bushings; changed orange signal lenses for clear; installed back-up camera and new radio head; added Spiker Engr hood struts, and replaced rear hatch struts; upgraded to Honda washer spray nozzles; added rear diff breather extension; painted the wheels.
Immediate to-do list:
Rear axle seals appear to be leaking, as well as the inner CV boots and upper ball joints; I'm going to do the UCA and LCA bushings at the same time, and I have a Bilstein OME Stage 1 lift from YotaMafia waiting to go in (1.5-2" w/ 880/906 springs); new muffler and Cali-spec exhaust manifold/header; LED lights everywhere.
Long-term to-do/Wants list:
Eventually I want some FN Five Stars and the larger tundra brakes; New speakers w/ sound matting, off-road lights, Sherpa Matterhorn roof rack; GMRS radio; ARB rear locker and on-board air with tank; high-clearance bumpers and winch; rock rails/sliders; snorkel; long-travel front and axle swap rear (wider to match long travel, and with disc brakes)? F-150 fuel tank swap, maybe?
I'm sure there something I'm forgetting, but I'm having fun learning and tinkering and wrenching on this thing, and it's a blast to drive around the tiny Japanese streets in Western Tokyo.
