Hey Joe, was going to post a ? about water pump replacement and your reply reminded me.
Getting ready for a long road trip with my 4R and wondered about doing preventative maintenance before the trip, like replacing the water pump. As far as I know mine's never been replaced though I did have the timing belt done at around 100K, it's now at 167K.
Thought it might be a good idea to go ahead and replace the pump before the trip so I called the local dealer to get a quote on the job. About passed out when they told me $850!!
So, I really have two questions-Does that sound like a legit price for the work and, do you think I should replace it before hitting the road for 3,500 miles pulling the Casita??

Thanks!!!
Bill

The whole front of the engine comes apart for the timing belt and while in there it's best to do the water pump.... so the price is close.
Listen for rattles or any tiny drips of water for tell tale indications. I wouldn't do it as it will gove you some warnings but when you finally decide for just a tiny bit more do the timing belt, water pump, belt tensioner and both cam seals. The big money on this project is getting in there so just spend that bit more and do everything.
Me? I wouldn't do it but just listen and keep and eye for droplets of water.
Just my opinion of course and others will feel differently.
Your about 30k from doing the timing belt again.
That water pump should have been done at the 100k mark

Thanks for the input Joe! Your thinking makes sense. I also looked up the job on-line and came up with a much better price.

Ever heard of this outfit? They list 4 shops in town that they say will do the job based on this estimate.
I'm leaning toward your "If it ain't broke don't fix it (yet)" thinking , but food for thought at least.

Awesome forum! I'm jumping from the FJ Cruiser Forums to here because I recently ordered a 2016 Quicksand TRD Pro. I love my 2008 FJ but I will be parting with it come September. I've already gleaned some great information here on the forum and got a good jump on my build list. Kudos to those who post, and especially those who post with pics Ciao!

Just wanted to stop and say what's up. Been lurking and buying things for a few months. Picked up my 2016 4Runner XP back in January. Painted the roof rails black and added some mats.... That's about it for now.

Prospective T4R owner!

Hello,
First time poster and hope to submit more in the future! I'm looking at purchasing a 2004 4Runner with the the sport package V8 4wd.
It has 208,000 miles and just wondering what to be cautious of before purchasing. It looks like by what I'm reading timing belt/water pump may be the most major issues to look for. The vehicle doesn't smoke or have any leaks. Their is a slight vibration in the vehicle while at highway speeds, I'm thinking it may just be an alignment issue. I'm so excited to be the future owner of a 4Runner! Thanks for your help!

Bob,
I'm not familiar with them as i am from the east coast originally, Once the front of that motor is opened up all the parts for water pump, timing belt, tensioner and maybe cam seals...... I would especially do the timing belt too as it would probably be about $50 more for that and then your good for another 100k.
The price you show is much more reasonable and very close to the price i got here in Arizona for a timing belt replacement.
Actually i will probably do the job myself when the time comes. (I'm due in 30k)
watch this video if i haven't already posted it for an idea of the job.

If this is the Repairpal in fort collins co that your talking about they seem to have very good reviews and they have ASE Certified Mechanics which is a good thing

Hey everyone. Just recently got a '90 Hilux Surf. Feels good to be back in a Toyota and have an off road rig again. Signed up here to get all sorts of info on the tech and any mods I wanted to do. Also to look at people's rides that they post. Looking forward to being a part of the 4runner family.

New member from Ca.

Bought my second 4runner, the first was a 2001 (sold with 300k+ on it), now is a 2003 4runner with 150K on it. sweet! Mostly. well except for the dang electrical problem.

It appears in several forms:
Does not start (lights on the dash work)
Rarely, will die while driving.
In both cases I can wiggle/tap or press on the top on the power distribution box and hear it connect and it will start and run.
The problem is worse when it's hot outside or the car has been running a long time >15min.

What I have done to try and resolve:
Changed the starter relay
Changed the ignition switch
Tapped on the starter to try to get it running.
Changed out the battery connections as they seemed slightly loose.
Started to remove the PDB but realized that there is wiring underneath.

It was in a accident prior to my purchase damage was on the passenger side and was repaired at a body shop a year prior to my purchase.

Any thoughts?

Greetings from Portland, OR

Hi all,

I am in the market for a 4th gen., hoping to find a '03-'04 V8 in good shape. I'm not new to forums (have done plenty of my own wrenching over the years) but will be new to 4runners and so I thought I'd start in here. I'll be reading up in the forums and posting a WTB ad in the classifieds as soon as my post-count gives me the green light ;)

Hopefully in short order I'll also be posting pictures of a 4th gen. in my garage!

Not new to the forum, but reintroducing myself. Had a 1999 limited with 168,000 miles and just traded it in on a 2008 limited with 86,000 miles.

During the 10 years I had the 99 it was good to me (well except for the pink milkshake and subsequent issues it caused) but it was time for an upgrade.

Found the 08 at a Toyota dealership a few hours away after looking for several months and decided to go for it. The carfax looked good with most of the service done at Toyota dealerships, and I found out when I got there the previous owner was actually a service manager at Toyota and traded it in the day he retired for a brand new 4Runner. Needless to say, it's clean!

Initial impressions: I can't believe how much smoother and quieter the 08 is. My 99 was in excellent shape and very well maintained, but always felt more rugged. The 08 on the other hand is a little more civilized but could still probably get me to most of the same places the 99 got me (although it had the rear locker, the 08 doesn't). Initially I was looking for the V8, but even the V6 is a huge upgrade in terms of power and drivability when combined with the 5 speed transmission.
