New to the forum, and 4runners and need some advice (and a 4wd vehicle since I just moved to the mountains)...

Going to look at a 3rd gen tomorrow.
Vitals:
99 SR5 Manual
78k miles
Rebuilt title
Asking $8000
Pics show a nearly perfect interior, exterior looks straight, and underneath a bit of surface rust but doesn't look bad.

I jumped when I saw the price because I realize this is a pretty desirable combo. Then my heart sank when I found out it's been totalled. My question is basically how much it would take to total one of these? Good places to look for obviously shoddy repairs? Other items to note?

Seller says timing belt has been changed.

Pending carfax/info from seller on title, I'm thinking of offering $6.5k as a jump off point. There are a couple of similar spec 3rd gens in classifieds here now, but all with at least 50k more miles, and $2000 more expensive.

Appreciate the advice as I can't start a thread in the 3rd gen section yet. (Probably should have made this novel of a post into 15 separate paragraphs lol)

Just joined the club with a 98 SR5. I am a big fan so far. Now time to figure out this Dome light fuse issue.

Forgot to post in the new member section!

I came from the MINI world. In fact I haven't had a truck since my father's I-Beam 60s Ford back in HS (which I wish I still had)... We've been a one car family for a very long time. In college, no car, just motorcycles. In SF when I was younger living in the city, we eventually picked up a Karmann Ghia as a project car, which I loved dearly, but suffered badly towards the end. I got into MINIs in the early 2000s, an we went through four of them (I learned early that for MINI/BMW it pays to lease; 3 years in and trade, thanks tot he extremely high maintenance costs) which grew, then shrank, based on our family needs. Once both kids were old enough to climb in and out easily we downsized back to the smallest MINI, which we still have. Otherwise, 11 bikes.

I got the 4Runner after several months of consideration because, like the MINI for small rockets, it was the only larger vehicle I was interested in. I wanted a truck frame, not unibody. I wanted offroad capability, but also family wagon feasibility. I wanted to buy in on a long-term truck that was ready for whatever my growing kids and increasing outdoor planning could handle. I made my sale arrangements remotely, and picked the truck up without a test drive or a new-car overview at the dealership. Not needed! Right off the lot, quite pleased. It's an adjustment, after years of zipping around with the gear to weight ratio of my MINIs, and it feels like a boat, in comparison to my MINI, which is lowered and has a rear sway. But it's exactly what it wants to be. Broke it in immediately as we are doing a lot of construction at the house. Will be towing in about a week, once the dump runs begin.

Stoked!

Anyway, swapped out for TRD Pro rims (my original rim takeoffs with 60 miles on them are for sale in the classifieds section) and this week did the grille mod, and then added the cross rails. Next up is plastidipping the front valence, and then probably going to cool it on the mods for a spell. Scratch that, I'm planning the always-on outlet mod too.

Camping in three weeks as well...

Anyway, cheers!

Cement Pro should be here this week.

Looked for 2 days, prob. 20 in the US that didn't have the cargo slider.

Just bought a high miles 2003 V8 4x4 for my son. Needs some work but hopefully we can get it in shape pretty soon.

Congrats, so you were looking for one w/o a cargo slider?

I'm almost finished with my undercarriage complete overhaul. Waiting on the custom lateral link from sonoran steel. Had some time to get creative with the factory 16s while I search for the right wheels.

20/17 Wheel swap?

I'm new to the forum - owned a 1994 SR5, a 2003 SR5, and am about to purchase a 2017 Limited. I've been reading all the posts about wheel size (really, I have!), and am seeking some input for a question I haven't seen.

Would it make sense to swap my 17" wheels from the 2003 for the 20" wheels on the 2017 Limited? I primarily do urban driving, but once or twice a year I'll go up some rutted dirt roads to get to trail heads, fishing spots, etc.

Does it make sense to put 14 year old wheels on a new vehicle? Or should I just keep the 20's since most of my driving is on city streets and freeways.
Thanks so much.

I sold my 20" LE wheels and used that money to buy 17" aftermarket rims. Threw on 275/75/r17 bg ko2s and ive couldnt be happier. Minor rubbing at full lock turns.

Finally a 4runner owner!

Jumping over from the frontier forum, lost my mind this weekend a traded for a 2017 SR5 Premium. 2 days of ownership and I'm freaking loving this thing! Wanted a TRD Off Road, but the "boss" wanted a sunroof and heated seats and those were tough to find around us.
