Hello,
My wife and I are new members. We enjoy driving our 2010 Ford Escape offroad in the Sequoia National Forest near Lake Isabella, CA, but it is not difficult to reach the limit of the Escape's ability. So we are seriously considering a new 4Runner Offroad Premium with KDSS or a Pro.
Since the forest area is 160 highway miles away from where we live we are thinking the KDSS might offer a good balance between onroad driveability and offroad capability.

New to the Toyota family
After driving Jeep JKUs for years I finally decided to leave jeep and come to Toyota. I jumped in head first and purchased a black 2015 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro. I could not be happier! The level of performance, feel, comfort, is amazing. I am in love with this machine that I have come to name Vader. She is beautiful and rugged.

I have a 1995 3.Slow 4x4 Automatic with a bad transmission. Are all the V6 Autos the same?
I have found a used transmission for a good price but it is out of a '95 V6 2wd.
Both are R series transmissions but are they exactly the same?

Signed up back in 2016, but just now getting around to post more.
2006 V6 SR5 with the part-time 4x4.
Neglected the car for a while, but catching up with maintenance and giving my 4Runner some love.
Now embarking on the task of changing lower and upper ball joints, and outer tire rods. Just need to buy a couple more tools.
Unfortunately, a few weeks back a drunk tree hit me on the rear passenger side and it took off... so that repair project will happen some time when all the other things are taken care of.
BTW... anyone in the Belton/Temple area and surroundings?
Would love to have fellow 4Runner owners nearby to hang out with and maybe help out with jobs, even if just giving me pointers.

One of my friends did the opposite... sold her 2015 4Runner and went back to Jeep. Never understood why... oh well

Long time lurker (trying to get posting privileges)
Hi all-
I'm on my 2nd 4th gen- my first one got 320k+ before I sold it and as far as I know it's still on the road.
Posting here because (I think) it's what's required to be able to create a new post.
I just went through a laborious experience that touches on several of the common issues with high mileage 4thgens-
- VSC lights (and the resulting zero point calibration)
- Cat issues
- O2 sensors
- Passing smog (ca)
They all converged, and I managed to fix it all myself. I'm not a novice, but I'm not a tech either. Hoping to unify all of these common issues into one thread that should allow the layperson to take care of all of these pesky issues all at once.
This forum is an incredible resource. I figured everything out by scouring separate threads, and I even found out here that I could get a replacement dashboard for free in the process. (Dealership knocked it out in two days, no charge. Not bad for a car from 2003- thanks, Toyota!)

Had a Desert Sand Metallic '91 for 7 yrs that I regrettably sold when my 2nd kid was on the way. After a FJ40, FJ80 and several years away from Toyota 4x4's, just purchased a 2017 TRD Pro I look forward to modifying. Good to be a Toyota owner again.

New 4Runner Owner
This past Saturday I purchased a used 2015 SR5 in Super White and promptly drove it through a driving rain storm to get it back home.
Iorek Byrnison - V6 Edition
CBI skid plates are already on order, as are proper floor mats and lighting upgrades. That'll have to do until I save up some $$$ for frame sliders and eventually front/rear bumper replacements. After that I'm not sure what the plan is.
I'll be taking it to the Mid-Atlantic Overlanding Festival up in PA in a couple of weeks so if you're there come on over and say hello. I'll be the pasty white dude in cargo shorts and an Orioles hat with a Corgi / Aussie Shepherd mix dog. I'll be parked between a Series 100 Land Cruiser and a red Ford Ranger with a camper cap conversion.

Ahoy from TN (Toyota Noob)! Just picked up a 1990 4Runner 5 spd to begin my low budget trail rider project. Just getting into the off road gig, but I've had my eye on it for years. The wife and I set a $2000 budget for start up costs, and though it'll take more than that over time, I plan to keep costs as low as possible. Still have kids at home and whatnot.
Anyway, this jewel was listed for $1200 obo, no title, no A/C. We took a ride to Memphis and gave it a quick look (it was HOT that day!), and I offered the guy $800. He didn't haggle, so I probably should have come in lower, but I think we both ended up happy with the deal, so we'll call it a win.
Trailered it home (had a trailer flat on the way), and still haven't had much time to get into it very far, but I've figured out that though the xfer case seems to work as it should, I get no action at the front wheels. From what I've read it's largely vacuum actuated, and since I don't plan to register or tag it, I may see if I can just rig it to be full time 4wd, especially if that keeps me from spending a bunch of money on this thing.
It's rough as a night in jail, but I think there's potential. The interior is decent. Appears to have 3 or 4 inches of body lift, decent 31" tires (3 match) and the honkin' winch bumper that will eventually be fitted with an 8000-8500 lb winch. Also planned is an aftermarket locker for the rear, and maybe manual hubs, though if I can get the auto hubs working I'll just roll with those. Noticed it has what I think is a 4 link in the rear (no leafs, but coils). Is that stock?
The plan is to get the wife involved too. We still enjoy time together, but she's a bit skittish with the off road stuff, so the first few outings will be on the bunny slopes. Not a bad thing I suppose, since I'll be a Noob too, and it's best to ease into things at my age. At least I shouldn't have to do much more than get the front axle to engage to do that much. Lockers and winches can wait til she gets used to the bumpy stuff.
Well, loads to learn. Looking forward to benefiting from the knowledge base here and maybe even contributing a bit here and there.

Newbie Hello
Hello all,
I obviously am new to the forum. I am also new to owning a 4runner. I just bought a 3rd gen SR5 sport 4wd. 189K miles but extremely well maintained by the previous owner. I literally just bought the vehicle last night and I love it. I've always wanted a runner but they had previously always been just out of reach in terms of price. I finally have been able to acquire one.
I look forward to delving deeper into this forum. I do work on my own vehicles but not a huge DIY guy.
Anyways, thanks for your time.
