I'm a total noob

Hello, all!

I'm a total noob and I feel like I'm drinking out of a fire hose with all this information. I don't even know if I am posting in the correct place or manner. I am currently parting with a VW wagon and I absolutely love toyota as a whole but the 4runner really speaks to me. I have a long term girlfriend and a dog and we love to go on cross country trips by making an 8 hour roadtrip into a week long trip taking the windiest gravel roads we can find. I have done minimal research and I have decided that a 3rd or 4th gen would be the best fit for me. I dont even know where to begin when looking for the best years of these generations, what mods to make immediately when purchasing, and what things to look for when purchasing a 4runner. I'm looking to spend around $10,000ish and appreciate any direction or help anyone can give me.

Cheers

Just Getting Started

Recently purchased a '97 4Runner after selling my 1981 CJ8. Couldn't be happier. Been lurking here since the buy looking for suspension info. This wagon runs great with 167k miles and everything works. Unlike the jeep. Problem is it rides and drives like a waterbed. I want to restore the ride with minimal lift. 1"-1.5" no more than 2". I've read the 3rd Gen thread on lifts but the info I'm looking for is who sells a complete lift/suspension kit to restore better than new ride with dependability. It will be used as a daily driver as well as tent camping, two tracks, and logging roads. Not going to bang it up but not babying it either. I also want to buy all new top of the line bushings, ball joints, etc to rebuild the front end. I have absolutely no service history on it so I am in the process of starting my own history. Any advice and info appreciated. 4Runner is a 1997, 3.4 V-6, Auto trans, SR5, with 167k miles on the clock. Thanks.

Regards,

new to me '12, ISO original owner

Picked up a nice '12 limited last month, ISO original owner that lived in New Jersey and serviced at Clinton NJ Toyota. I'm guessing they had a fullroof rack and frequented the Jersey coast. Has BFG 275/55r20 ko2's and automatic boards they sold around 70k.

I think I'm ready to pull the trigger on an 18 Off Road Premium, but the only feature I really wish it had is the smart key that the limited has. My wife has a Pilot and I never knew how convenient a keyless entry/ignition was until her car. I don't know if I want to stay in a keyed world.

Hello all! just picked up my 2017 36 hours ago. I have loved the 4runners ever since i drove a 3rd/4th gen over a decade ago and i am finally able to afford one!

ex-rental vehicle from florida with 34k miles, toyota certified with extended bumper-to-bumper will make sure repairs are covered, and ABSOLUTELY NO RUST ANYWHERE! I had to jump on it.

I'm coming from a modified Civic so all this 4wd stuff is new to me, but i have a laundry list of parts to buy in the upcoming years and mechanical know-how to install everything. Not excited about the gas mileage but who gets a truck to save on gas, amirite?

Been Lurking Awhile

Hi guys, been lurking a few months now. I'm a long time Toyota owner, beginning in '74 with a Celica GT 5 speed, lots of trucks and a '94 4Runner and a '97 Limited.
Where I live requires a 4x4 or AWD. I'm currently shopping a Subaru 3.6 Outback Touring or a T4R TRD Off Road Premium. So far I've just been learning as much as I can about both. Today I test drove the T4R. The local Subaru dealer doesn't have the 3.6 Touring in stock but I'll do that soon. Lots of good info here and I'm hoping that I don't like the Outback as much as I did the T4R. That would make my decision much easier. I'll try and not bug you guys with too many stupid questions. Love the Forum.

New to the club

Hey everyone,

First off, a huge thank you to all of you as well as members from other communities that have helped me through this process. It's been a long time coming and I can officially say I've been able to acquire one hell of a ride. I was a lurker for some time - well, a very long time - and reading through all the forums really helped set me up with the perfect 4Runner.

While a lot of it was luck and timing, I found exactly what I was looking for. A 2018 Midnight Black Metallic TRD Pro...at MSRP. What was even more amazing was the fact that no one test drove this bad boy before I did, so I'm the first to ever put some miles on it. I'm extremely happy and excited for what's to come. I don't plan on doing a whole lot to this vehicle, but with a little help, I hope to have this beauty ready to rock and roll...well, not so much the rolling part. Is that a Jeep thing? Eh.

Here she is:

New guy here. Long time toyota guy but just got back into one. A 97 runner limited. Unfortunately 2nd day of ownership in the trans died on me. I’m not having much luck finding a replacement so figured I’d join the forum and start making friends.
