Hi,
New guy here! I just bought my first 4runner '99 Limited with 184k miles. Loving it, can't wait to get it dirty. I used to have a '98 Grand Cherokee with a fair amount of mods loved driving over stuff in it. Been a few years but looking forward to leaving asphalt behind for a slow climb up a trail.

Thanks for having me,
J.P.

Time for change

Ive had a 2015 4runner limited for 3 years now. Deciding that its time to beef this baby up. Been living on these forums stalking and stalking for mods to get. Really appreciate everything that has been made here. Just ordered my prinsu rack and RTT, working on getting a lift now. Im out in Denver, CO so if anyone wants to chat and maybe hit trails let me know!

Robert Mendel - 1985_4Runner

I just bought this from my mechanic's son, who couldn't afford the engine work after
researching and finding this 1st Gen 1985 4Runner. It is "sort of" collectible.

The previous owner was a pilot who, for personal reasons, disconnected the odometer at 77,777.7 miles. (something to do with emergency landing frequency being '"777" or something). The mechanic thinks the mileage is somewhere between 100k - 150k based on the wear to clutch, brake and accelerator pedals.

I paid 4500 and am putting 2-3k into the engine rebuild. I would like to restore it's body to "show" condition if possible, but not repaint it entirely - retain the original paint "patina" as much as is advisable. The front end has replacement used 4runner parts - some collision. The front two fenders and hood APPEAR to be from a different truck of the same vintage and color.

I'm wondering how to match the single phase paint to the rest of the truck, rehang the hood so that it fits correctly, and go around the rest of the truck and take out the small dents, restore the bondo on the rear left corner, etc. and get the wheels looking good again, if possible. I'd like to sell it when it's done and hopefully get my money out of it . (I did my mechanic a favor by purchasing it from his son, but ultimately, I don't want to keep it forever.

I could hang on to it for several years and enjoy it gingerly, but keep it covered and running well and hope it goes up in value. It's a "new" "collectible", near as I can tell, so the value is elusive.....
This recent sale got my attention, though (it's a 1986, and supposedly the 1985 straight front axle version, like I bought, is far more desirable): 4RUNNER | TOYOTA | 1986 | VIN # jt3rn64w7g0057224 | Worldwide Vintage Autos .

And this one: 4RUNNER | TOYOTA | 1986 | VIN # jt4rn62d1g0079071 | Worldwide Vintage Autos

And this one: 1987 Toyota 4Runner 5-Speed for sale on BaT Auctions - closed on July 25, 2017 (Lot #5,141) | Bring a Trailer

And this one especially!: 1986 Toyota 4Runner 4x4 for sale on BaT Auctions - sold for $17,500 on May 6, 2019 (Lot #18,523) | Bring a Trailer

Mine needs some upholstery repair:
(seat and inside front drivers door) , and perhaps its unrealistic to hope to get it to "pristine" condition. But I'm hoping the market for a "patina" original 1985 4Runner will be strong going forward and am trying to figure out HOW MUCH SHOULD I PUT INTO IT?

Or should I just get to a certain point and hope to get it sold for $9-11k? Is that the best I should hope for?

Here are all my pictures:
Robert Mendel - 1985_4Runner.

The engine is being rebuilt for about 60 days and we can have the engine compartment painted red while it's out, but I'm trying to figure out the right strategy for working on the truck after it's running again. Thanks for your consideration. Robert Mendel

Hi all! I bought a 4th gen 4R recently in South America for a road trip. It's also the first time I own a car and it's been great fun so far!
I'm eager to learn about car mechanics and the 4R, there is so much knowledge on this site!

Hello everyone,

My name is Aaron and I’m new to the site and I’m also the new owner of a freshly rebuilt 88 1st Gen 22re 5 speed manual. I’m up in Alaska, I work in the oil field on a 2 weeks on 2 weeks off rotational schedule. My plan with my 1st Gen is to replace all the suspension, steering and ball joints etc on the chassis. At the end of the summer I’m planning on driving my 1st Gen down to the Baja to Todos Santos were my winter place is. Hoping to learn all I can about these rigs and get the bugs worked out of it and have a sweet Baja rig down in Mexico in the winter time.

Cool New member dumb question

Hello all. I'm a new member DIY'er all the way. 2006 4th Gen. 4Runner Limited w/V8 207k miles. Never done one of these forum sites before. Is there rule about when I can ask questions of the community?
