Greetings Earthlings

I bought my first Toyota today. It is a 1997 4Runner Limited.

It needs a head gasket, new seats and a new carpet kit. For starters. I aim to fix it up, over time. I joined this forum to get ideas and input for practical mods. I hope to meet helpful and informative folks. This seems like a quality place to do it.

Not only is this my first Toyota, this is also the first forum I have ever joined. Glad to be here.

-Matt

First Toyota, a 98 S/C Desert Dune! Quick backstory on how I got here:

I was a Subaru guy. Had a 02 wagon that got totaled. I was sad.

I also had a Jeep.

Then I bought a Saabaru.

The Jeep sucked. It was uncomfortable on the streets of Los Angeles. So I sold it.

3 days later, Mother Nature ended the life of the Saabaru.

I knew for certain I wanted another (cheap-ish) 4x4 as a secondary car, and at the time good 3rd Gens weren’t in my price range. I considered a 4th Gen to do double duty as a daily, but again couldn’t find something in the mileage range.

By chance a coworker referred me to a friend who was selling a TRD supercharged 3rd Gen. it’s been in the family since new and was currently being driven. 190k on the odometer, the price was right, and it was mine.

2019 Metallic Blue TRD Off-Road

Hey I'm wondering about the navigation. I just bought my 4Runner used with 15,000 miles on it. I am wondering about the Navigation as it shows that the SD card is not in. I was looking around and saw that Toyota has an updated Nav SD card for $160. Does every TRD come with Nav? Sorry new, clearly.

New to me '16 Trail. Never been off road in my own vehicle - always with friends or my Dad. He owned a 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen and we'd get lost when I was a kid. I remember when we went to get the 3rd gen the Toyota dealer in Ogden, UT had a black Twin Turbo Supra on the showroom floor. Now that dad is in Florida (Hill AFB to Eglin AFB), he's got an FRS he beats up on and said he'd fly out and get that lovin' feeling again in the mountains in mine.

After my wife and I relocated to Colorado for work I made it a priority to get a 4Runner. Finally did it in July after my '13 WRX was totaled in a hail storm.

Got lost yestarday with an experienced friend around Dakan Road, Upper Jackson Road, and Long Hollow Road. Got to a section somewhere near Long Hollow that triggered my self-preservation instinct and we turned back. We'd been driving for probably 3 hours at that point. To my buddies credit, he wasn't mad I called it. I don't think he was that confident we'd get over the top without a little trail damage either.

Something I didn't realize - you can go down a section and come back up it and have a totally different experience. Around Dakan or Upper Jackson, we went down a section pretty easily. When we came back we both got a little stuck going up. He backed up a little and nailed it in his Xterra. I couldn't see where he want exactly because of trees, but I stopped in the same place. I was able to go down to 1st gear in 4 Low, engaged the locker, and the car did the rest without much input from me.

I don't want to do trails that would need rock sliders, but I now really want a set in case I have a lapse in judgement or just make a mistake. New tires are also gonna be important. These wheels will probably get Blizzaks for the winter, and I'll get the TRD Pro wheels and some nicer tires for off road.

Also - words can't describe how much I missed a roll down rear window.

New guy here from the Northwest US. This is my first 4Runner and only my second Toyota. First Toyota was also my first new vehicle; a 1992 Toyota 4x4 pickup regular cab 4cyl bought for $12,800.

Picked up a 2019 TR4 SR5 last week. It's simple, capable, and will tow my UTV and utility trailer into the mountains.

Not planning many mods since I use my UTV for off-roading and exploring. The 4Runner is just for getting it to the trailhead and for light wheeling, so maybe some better tires before winter.

Finally have pictures

As stated in my previous reply, I took some pictures and now need to know how to post them in the forum. Can anyone help further my education? I am attempting to use the attachment tool. We will see if that works or not.

Hello

Hello. I’m a new member and new to Toyota. I just bought a 2001 4Runner with high miles so I’ll be asking for advice along my journey.
Thanks. Nice to meet you all.

I don't have a 4Runner (Yet?) I'm trying to decide if I should trade in my CRV to get one. My CRV is only 2 years old, and if I could go back in time I would just get the 4Runner, but I'm deciding if should just go ahead and make the leap now. 5th gen CRV definitely hasn't been as reliable as I was expecting going with a Honda, and I would like more room, a real engine, some more off-road capability, and some bulletproof reliability. I also just don't feel the CRV really fits my personality. Obviously this is going to be a somewhat biased forum for asking this question, but I mainly just wanted a sounding board while I try to think through my decision.

I've been a member for a few years and I finally convinced the wife to get a new vehicle so I can have the 4Runner. This one will be mine within the next couple of months and I already have a list of mods to be done as soon as it's actually MINE.
