Hi there. I'm new to the forum but I've owned a 3rd Gen for 15 years (175,000 miles). I'm actually selling it, and someone recommended I post it for sale on this forum. So I joined. My only regret is that I should have joined a decade ago!
In any event, I've had a lot of vehicles in my life and my 4Runner has by far been the most reliable and useful. Super fun.
Pic for credibility...

ok so there is a 15 post min for new members, and this is a subforum for the new members to post up, but that's kinda hard to do when you cant start your own thread to introduce yourself... So say hi tell us a little about yourself, what your looking for here etc. that way you can get started on the way to completing your minimum requirement of posts to proceed to making your own threads and asking your own questions. i will be glad to help where i can and direct you or link you to the proper places or put you in touch with people who can help or know more than me. But please for the love of God don't go into other members threads and start posting crap and nonsense just to get your 15 post min. That min post was created so that spammers, trolls and bots don't come here and litter or clutter up threads and post ads or links etc. so here, i have opened the door for you to post away, but please keep it civil and respectful -that's all we ask.
-i don't even care if you ask repetitive questions or common questions that can be answered by reading the FAQs or a simple search.
Below are some useful hints as to upping your post counts and making friends here and or getting help looking for the answers you seek;
1. complement people on their builds and pics, each section has a picture thread, and tons of great pictures posted up daily, go there and look through them click the like button on the ones you like, people will see your not a bot and everyone likes getting likes -its a win win!
2. if you see a rig you like or think is cool look at the persons signature at the bottom of their post, often times there is a link there to their build or at least a list of mods. click the link and look at their build for ideas, ask relevant questions about their rig. -even if you just skim the thread and didn't read it. and if the OP(original poster) or someone else gives you flack just say "i missed that part sorry" (works everytime, trust me). or you can even post up asking a specific question.
3. every section has a FAQ, so try their first for you questions, you can almost always post up in those links and threads if you dont see your specific question.
4. use the search function at the upper right hand side of the page, just to the left of your screen name and notifications. and hey if you resurrect a 4 year old thread we will all know you used the search feature and are trying.
5. you can also PM members directly to ask questions if you are feeling shy or don't want to publicly ask a question, but this probably wont help you make your min 15 post, but it will help you get your answers.
-there are also several other ways of upping your post count, but i'm not gonna give you all the secrets...
-Please note i am not a moderator or sight administrator, and i can not look into your account for you, or help you activate your account. also it may take a while for your account to "unlock" after your 15 posts have been made, its not an instantaneous "opening of the heavens" and open posting may take a few mins or a couple of hours (your post might have to be up for review to confirm you are not "troll posting". so please don't ask me to unlock your account or something of the like, i simply am a contributing member like yourself trying to make this place a better source/resource of 4runner knowledge.
as always have nice day

Just bought a 3rd gen from New Jersey and drove it all the way back to North Carolina. It took about 9 hours with -about 2 stops. At about hour 7 of the trip, I noticed the battery light was on. Maybe an hour later the ABS light turned on. 20 minutes later I noticed the digital clock dimming. About 40 minutes later it died as I pulled into an autozone parking spot (got lucky it didn’t die earlier). AutoZone charged the battery and at first it said the battery was bad. However they brought the battery up to the counter and tested it with a different machine and it said it was a good battery. Put it back in my T4R and it started up. The machine said that the battery, spark plugs, and alternator were good. Went home 20 min later and grabbed a multimeter. With the engine off, it read :12.86V. Then started the T4R and it slowly crept up to 14.28V. Then had someone rev the engine at 1500-2000 rpm and it did not get past 14.28V, meaning that the voltage regulator should be fine. Then shut the truck off and turned on the headlights and it read somewhere around 12.55V. So according to the readings, everything looks like it’s working properly. However I can’t seem to figure out why the battery died in the first place.
So right now, everything seems fine. However I’m about to do another road trip and don’t want my truck to die while I’m driving it again.
I’m going to check tomorrow morning to see if it drained any.
Anybody have any idea why the battery died while I was driving it in the first place?

I dunno, maybe a bad ground? Check the short wire from the battery negative to the body - is that tight? Or maybe the PO didn’t tighten the battery terminals down well enough.
Given what you described I would guess the alternator or battery, but I’m no mechanic. I do know that when I start mine the voltage instantly jumps from 12.7 to 14.3 - if yours slowly creeps up there then maybe that indicates an issue with the battery.
You’d get a much better response if you post your question in the 3rd gen specific forum - once you get your 10 posts in on this thread.

a few lame pics will have to suffice....

Hey all, Just like everyone else, i'm new to the forum. Had a 2016 Range Rover, after 4 years of constant maintenance, sensor issues and blah blah blah, i had to get rid of it. It was like dating a gorgeous model with lots of drama. So beautiful but so...
Anyways i just got a 2020 4runner TRD off-road premium. added a frontrunner full slim line 2 roof rack, TRD pro wheels and BFG Ko2's and i think it's sexier than the Range. Taking it upstate for Christmas and will have some fun with it on all the dirt roads around the farm.
I'm looking for other's in Brooklyn and in Sullivan county who want to go off-road. I'm near Roscoe, Livingston Manor, Callicoon center. If you like to fly fish, ice fish or drive, let me know!
Below a gratuitous pic of the Runner.

New to the forum, just wanted to drop in and say hello. Just bought a '20 ORP in white. I've been driving full size trucks for the last 10 years but have always loved the look of the 4Runner. Had a ton of problems with my last truck so decided to go a different direction. Looking forward to the new journey here!

preventative maintanance
Hi. I'm new.
Just bought an '05 V8 SE with 180k mi. I'm excited to bring her back into tip-top shape. Any recommendations for maintenance?
(Besides the following, which I have replaced)
ALL fluids
air/cabin filter
radiator
rack and pinion
front axle
timing belt/water pump
transfer case seal
headlights
I was thinking maybe:
fuel pump/filter?
spark plugs?
Thanks for recommendations!

I picked up a brand new Silver 2019 Off Road Premium the first part of November. As of this post it has ~1800 miles on it and has been off road 4 times since I picked it up. Profile picture was taken a couple days ago on the 4th off road trip. I'm thinking of just adding a set of side steps to kinda add to its personality.

Good evening everyone ! I bought my first 4 runner this weekend. It's a 2005 limited 4wd v6. Basically in mint condition inside and out . Has 198k miles . 1 owner and garage kept in south florida.
I'm extremely excited to start my 4 runner journey . It makes me sad though that I had chosen a 2015 Tacoma over a 2014 4 runner a few years ago .
Here are some pics ! Enjoy !
