I am also in Socal and picked up a 2wd 2.7 with 180k on it for $1800 a few years ago, it was stock. I put suspension and other upgrades on it and was still under 5k. I was never impressed by the 2.7 even though it was a very reliable engine.
I picked up a stock 1997 sr5 4x4 v6 5-speed for $2700 in 2017 put new suspension under it and have never looked back. I recently wrecked that one and purchased another 1997 sr5 4x4 5-speed a few weeks ago, that one set me back $2900, it already had a lift and roof rack installed, I didnt care for the setup so I swapped the parts from my wrecked one onto it.
If you look around a bit, you can find good deals on these trucks, they shouldn't cost you that much unless you want them to.
I suggest looking on Offerup and Craigslist, you should find a wide variety for under $6500. Best of luck to you, these are fun trucks.

Wow—it's like you're reading my mind.
Dude came down to 6K. Same day (hours ago) I spot a 2001 sr5 V6 for 6K—2wd, but only 100K on the odometer.
I'll admit what I dig about the 2.7 is that it's just got the vibe I'm looking for: the lift, the angry grill. The other doesn't, and I'm not sure what all that would cost.
I get that the 2.7 will be sluggish, but honestly? As a bike guy every car I drive, including my friend's Tesla, bores me when it comes to going fast. Will the 2.7 pull 70 with comfort on the highway? Will it go up mountain hills without me feeling like it's going to roll backwards? Would I be total fool to opt for the 2.7 over the V6 because I like its bling?

If you're willing to look outside of the beach area you will find better deals. There is a 1997 4x4 v6 with a 2" lift 179000 miles for $3600 in Ontario on Offerup. I only searched 1997 4runner 4x4, if you search any year 4runner 2wd or 4x4 you will get a ton of results, some are stock some are lifted, some have high mileage, some dont. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a higher mileage 4runner, even if they were halfway taken care of you'll get a lot of life out of it, my newest has 240000 on the clock and I didnt think twice about it.
The 2.7 is sluggish, especially with a lift and tires.
I understand the speed of bikes and hardly any 4 wheeled vehicle will compare to that, but I like a vehicle that can get out of it's own way. I get the same gas mileage as my 2.7 with my 3.4 5-speed and much more go when I mash the pedal, not sure about the automatics. Going up mountain roads with the 2.7 was aggravating, even daily freeway traffic can be the same, the interstate 15 pass was a nightmare with the 4 banger. If I were to buy another 2.7 it would have to be the supercharged version with a 5-speed. I wouldn't call you a fool, but I would never buy a vehicle for an inflated price because of bling. If you shop around, you WILL find better deals, and even if the better deal doesn't come with the bling you like, you'll be money ahead to buy the bling yourself. 2k will get you a complete NEW lift and maybe some other goodies if you're willing to shop around.

So helpful. That 97 is looking pretty great! Sounds like something you wouldn't hesitate to pick up, huh?
Being honest, I think my main point of hesitancy really is that dang four cylinder. Like driving it, but my impression was: whoa—this thing is slow. Drove a V6 a few days earlier—it had issues I didn't want to take on—but the difference was noticeable.
For some reason I've been reluctant to consider anything with over 200K, but you've got me thinking differently on that front. Seems these are true tanks.

Hey I’m new to the app. I have an 08’ 4R I am looking to lift it and make performance upgrades in increase hp. I’m a shade tree mechanic from Texas. I have a bunch of questions. I have been checking out the threads to answer my questions but I cant find all the answers I am looking for. I can’t wait to post questions. I use to have an 03’ dodge ram 1500 4x4 with a 3” lift I got my 4R less than a year ago and it is time to upgrade. I noticed I have about an 1.5” of clearance before I hit the bump stops, I need to fix this.

New member here, although I've been lurking for a few months now.
I'm running a 2016 SR5, with mostly cosmetic mods up to this point (TRD Pro Wheels, Emblem Overlays, etc). Hoping to get out and explore some in the next few weeks though!

Hello, Had an old 94 4Runner that was destroyed in an accident. Picked up a used TRD Pro and it's been great!
Have been spending hours researching on the forum. Glad to start my posts.

Hello From Wichita Ks!
Hello All! I've read posts on this forum for a few years now. Finally decided to register today because I may have some questions coming up. I love 4Runner's and I'm on my second one now. Bought an 03 Runner in 2014 with 160k miles, sold it Dec 2018 with 230k and never had any mechanical issues. Just had to replace some front end parts here and there, wheel hubs, cv shafts... but I absolutely loved it! I only sold it because I upgraded to a 2012 with 120K. I've had it just over a year now and it has been perfect. (although I much prefer the power of the v8 in the 03 vs the v6 in the 2012). Unfortunately, I got stranded at work yesterday. Car wouldn't stay running. Classic symptoms of a bad alternator. She has 140k on her now. So, I'm going to start replacing that today and wanted to be prepared to be able to ask questions if I get stuck. Wish me luck!

Hey everyone! Brand new to the Toyota world. I’ve had 9 jeeps, built them into rock crawlers, taken them all over the place, and decided it was time for something different. Did a lot of research and just picked up a 2nd gen 4Runner - a 1994. The body is pretty rusted (I’ve got a body shop at work that can fix that), but the frame is solid and the motor, even though it’s a 3.slow, is strong and low mileage (the heads and gaskets we’re recently replaced). I’ll get a build thread going soon! Looking forward to seeing what this thing can do!

Greetings, 4Runner fam! It's great to be a part of the 4Runner community.
I just took possession of a 2020 TRD Off-Road Premium in Nautical Blue Metallic.
I was dead-set on purchasing a white, but then started noticing that like 4 of every 5 4R's I see on the road are white -- so when I saw the nautical blue, I knew that was the color I coveted.
I'm looking forward to seeking your guidance as I begin my build, and hopefully providing some insight and lessons learned along the way!
