New 4Runner Owner
Hello all,
We just picked up a 2019 TRD Offroad Premium. I came from the Jeep world (2004 Rubicon). We were looking for a 4-door Rubicon. After test driving a few I remembered about the 4Runner. I reserved the trim levels and found the one we have.
Dollar for dollar this vehicle was a no brainer, way more value. I'm going to do a build on it and get it out into the Colorado Rockies and hopefully Moab this spring/summer.
I think the first mod will be some rock sliders.

Hi all, new owner of a 2018 Pro in blue. Quick couple of questions:
1. Roof Racks. It seems gobi racks are the most popular, and look quite nice. What impact on gas mileage and wind noise does one produce, roughly?
2. The only emblem that is not blacked out is the 4runner on the back. I see runnin4tacos has a black overlay kit; can anyone comment on the quality of this product, specifically after long term UV exposure? Does it fade, warp, or lose adhesion? I do not want to purchase something that looks shitty in a year. Are there other alternatives that are better?
TIA

Good morning. New here and researching for my potential 4Runner. I am looking at 2 options right now - a 2002 limited 3.4L with ~130K miles vs a 2004 4.0L SR5 with ~200K (mostly highway). Both are close enough to me to check out. I have a VERY nice 2006 RAV4 V6 but she doesn't have quite the tongue weight capacity for the travel trailer I have coming. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on a second vehicle (I will not give up the RAV - love it for a daily driver!) that will spend most of it's life sitting beside the trailer - we will do maybe 4,000 miles a year on average simply as a tow vehicle.
I have seen pro's and cons for both the 3rd & 4th gens. Leaning toward the 2004 more for the gas mileage, but would appreciate your input. I am not looking to mod anything up, and will not be off-roading at all. She will be strictly a tow vehicle. I am in Canada, and in the mountains of BC, so it will take me at least 3 hours of up & down grades to get anywhere remotely flat.
I haven't seen either one of them yet, just the listings, and don't know the service records/history. The 2002 has had a tonne of upgrades to suspension, alternator etc, etc, so it sounds like it has been worked & played, but maintained as well. 2004 appears to be basically stock. Either one would be taken to my mechanic first (if I decided to make an offer) and have it gone over "like your daughter wanted to buy it."
Comments, advice, suggestions gratefully accepted. Cheers from BC

Lurch when changing gears
Hi all, I'm new here and have a question about my 4runner but I don't have the time to come on here often enough to reach the min post count. I will try to make this short
1. Recently purchased a 99 3.4L sr5 w/210,000 miles, I am the 3rd owner, the previous owner took excellent care of it and included all of the service records
2. I take it home, everything is fine. Start it the next day and put it in reverse, it lurches hard but backs up, put it in drive and it lurches again, but not as hard. The rest of the ride is smooth. The next day it does the same thing but drives well. Later in the day I go into town w/it, & when I come out of the store it now will not reverse. Went into every other gear but reverse & acted if I was either in park still or neutral.
3. I have it towed to a mechanic we've used in the past, they tell me I'm going to need many things including a new transmission, the bill would have been over 1,200 so we take it to another for a second opinion
4. This mechanic fixes leak in the valve cover gasket & intake gaskets (I am going off of my receipt, I am not the most well versed in cars) fixes a transmission leak, adds fluid, & loosens the trans. cable as he said it was abnormally tight. He says this car is in great condition and will run me for many more miles. Of course, when I leave, it does not lurch at all and runs well as normal the ride home (but i only put it in drive).
5. This morning I let the car warm up for about ten minutes as I thought maybe this would help with the lurch, put it in drive, and it lurches but still not as hard. Drives fine the rest of the way to my destination. Later I get into the car to go home after not driving it all day, it lurches when I put it in drive, but not bad. I also notice that my RPMs go up when I change gears. (Not sure if this is normal & I am just now paying attention to it) I drive it home and it runs well after it warms all the way up. Put it in reverse to back it into my spot @ home & it lurches hard again.
I know this is a 20 year old car so I am not sure if this is just something normal for it or something bigger. I really would not like to spend 1,000s of dollars on it but I am already attached as i have wanted a 3rd gen for a while. If anyone has any ideas please help! Feel free to pm me as well. I am stumped and am going to message the mechanic tonight. I may also message the prev. owner to see if it did this to her.

Roof racks will add noise but that can be slightly dulled on certain modes due to design.
