Hopefully I’ll be here for more knowledge after, right now I need the experts help on making this purchase. Problem areas etc.

Thanks!
By any chance can you read codes from the OBD2.

You can call Toytec, they keep a catalog of shops by zipcode. Hope this helps!

Ended up with an ex-LAPD beach patrol 1996 4Runner. It's been missing out on a lot of TLC throughout its life so I've been spending my time and money doing basic maintenance on it to keep it on the road.

I definitely need a more family-friendly (i.e. reliable and wife-friendly) T4R so I'll be in the market for a 5th Gen soon, but this truck has given me the bug hardcore!

That is one gorgeous rig. I always loved the 3rd gens but couldn't find one with acceptable amount of rust out here in upstate New York.

Yup! Bit of a long list but you gradually grow into it. I have a 2004 V6, I live in upstate, NY (rust belt), she was ignored by prev owners so I have a lot to catch upto. I would start with :

Braking system: (identify the wire emanating from the master cylinder)
1) Brake lines: when were they changed last, current condition.
2) Brake Master Cylinder condition: Do the foot pump test.
3) Condition of emergency brake lines and emergency brakes.

Rust Proofing:

I am going to make a thread on this but for what it's worth

1) check for any kinds of leaks before attempting, three products which are highly recommended are fluid film, CRC06026 and East wood internal frame coating (Frame Rust Prevention.)
2) apply fluid film in the undercarriage, check for rust holes in the floor boards this you could weld in sheet metal. Any rust on unstamped metal is fine. Fluid film has great creeping capability. Make sure to move car back and forth to cover all parts of driveshaft and CV joints.
3) Personally I would recommend changing out the transmission oil cooler lines and the power steering hoses since these are situated in the bottom of the truck and tend to rust more. Do check foe weeping lines before applying fluid film.
4) I usually keep applying fluid in the frame undercarriage and engine bay and before winter apply CRC where I think most of the road spray would be directly landing. I could go on but maybe for a separate thread.

a quick update on my wrecked project

Took the weekend to get a lot of work done. A big thanks to my brother who works in the automotive body repair world for taking his saturday to wrench away at the apron and radiator support. Towed it down with my dads '18 Ram 2500 to stretch its legs a little too

After a 12 hour day (frame machine, lots of hammering and pulling, body repair, welding, etc) the car was structurally sound. The next day I spent another 9 hours in 95 degree sun to throw everything back together and what do you know? i have an almost-complete, running rig

He ended up selling it on me the day before I was going to look at it. But I ended up buying an 06 SR5 V8 that I am hoping to pick up in a few days. Only 150K. A little more money but zero issues. Or so he says.

New owner saying hello. Just bought my very first Toyota about three weeks ago. It's a 2007 4Runner SR5 4WD that had just over 81,000 miles. I've spent a fair amount of time since I bought it lurking here trying to bring my knowledge up to something slightly higher than zero before I joined. I have to say I'm amazed at how easy the 4Runner appears to be to both repair and upgrade! That said, the only things I've done so far are convert the interior lighting to LED, add Weathertech Floorliners and replace the bottom weatherstrip on the rear hatch, which unfortunately has not fixed the issue I have with water collecting inside the hatch when it rains.

Great project! Looks like it was definitely worth the effort.

New

Hey everyone I’m new to the site so just wanted to say thanks for the add. I’ve had 2 4runners now. First one was a 97 limited and now a 19 TRD ORP. The mods have already begun. I look forward to seeing everyone’s rigs.

Recently was looking down into the engine bay and I found a couple of corroded lines (I have attached the pictures along with this post). I couldn't figure out which system these lines belong to. I peeked into the engine bay from underneath the radiator and found wherever the metal tubes extended out of the hose they had corroded extensively. I wanted to identify these tubes first before deciding whether it was safe to be driving the truck in this condition.

The lines emanate from the top of the front driver side wheel arch as a Nylon and Rubber hose and then steel lines come out of the hose which have badly rusted.

Hi I found out what these hoses are they are the FRONT DIFFERENTIAL VENT BREATHER hose OEM part number Toyota Part number 41507-60151

Good thing to always an OBD2 scanner like Bluedriver handy, you can check if they reset any code like Check Engine Light etc just before your visit. Best of luck let me know if you need any help.
