New kid on the block lol

Hello! My name is Tiff, newbie here. I have loved 4Runners for a long time and finally bought one, a 3rd Gen. I love the heck out of it. Has some upgrades and I have a long list of further upgrades so I can hit the trails 😁

Greetings! I'm brand new here as well. I just picked up a 2019 SR5 Premium a week ago, my 1st Toyota. Kept the old Xterra for the kids but the 4Runner is all mine. Completely stock right now, although I wish my wife was as open to some vehicle mods as your wife seems to be. My first goal is to get Techstream operational so I can add some keys and change some of the more annoying factory settings like the seat belt alarm. Never had a car I could hack before so this should be an interesting venture. Hopefully I'll find some info on that by digging further into these forums...

Hello all, new to the forum.

Leaving in a few minutes to go look at and test drive a new 4Runner for the first time. Will be buying either an ORP or Venture depending on local inventory and pricing.

New to Forum Looking for Tips/Suggestions for Upcoming Ouray, CO Trip

Hi All!

I am planning a mid-July, 2021 trip in my stock 2020 TRD PRO to Ouray, CO and would appreciate any helpful tips or suggestions you may have (e.g. non-camping trails to explorer, any OR accessory suggestions - ex tire deflators; portable compressors etc.)

I have a 3-day trip planned:
Day 1 - I plan on doing the Ophir pass to Telluride, then come back over Imogene Pass to Ouray.

Day 2 - Alpine Loop trails - heard Lower Engineer/mineral creek to Ghost town Animas fork to Hurricane to California to Corkscrew is a good route for my vehicle

Day 3 - I really want to tackle the Black bear pass (depending how my nerves go on the trails above)

Knowing my vehicle is stock, is there any suggestions as to upgrading anything that wouldn't be considered a major modification?

Current size is 265/70R/17. Was thinking of going to a 275/70R/17 and replacing the spare tire at the same time.

I've mostly done trails in the Midwest (Ozark hills) that are mostly dirt trails with ruts and rooted from trees.

Just really looking for any advice from our more experienced members.

Thank you!
-Jeremie

Welcome! I am in a similar situation coming from a Volvo XC60. She was just too pretty for the dirt roads, and 20" rims didn't help. I miss auto climate control (which is apparently standard in Canada) but TBQH I was THRILLED when I learned that DRCC is standard on Toyotas. It makes road trips a nicer experience.

Hi All,

15 posts to start a new one? I understand the point, but now I have to think of 14 more things to post that aren't stupid and/or annoying before I can ask for opinions on a 4Runner I just looked at.

My wife and I have been halfheartedly looking for a truck for a while. It's not an immediate need, but we'd like to have one. A 3rd gen 4Runner seems to make the most sense. It looks to be plenty capable off road, super reliable, and less expensive than other capable, reliable possibilities.

I found a 2000 Highlander with a manual gearbox (yes, I'm one of those people) near enough to me to easily check out. The next nearest 3rd gen stick I've seen is something like 500 miles away. I'll go ahead and post my questions/comments here while my memory is still fresh and ask again later when I can.

The good:

The body and frame are in really good shape. The car lived its life in MD and VA and doesn't appear to have seen much salt at all. There's some surface rust on the frame, but I didn't see anything on the body.

The interior is passable.

It has 163k miles, which doesn't really seem to be much for a 3.4L 4Runner.

There was no sign of axle seal issues. I checked both before and after driving it.

The bad:

It sounds like it has a bad throwout bearing. When you let out the clutch pedal, it gets quiet. When you depress the clutch pedal it gets very grumbly. It's not a squeal, but more of a lower pitch rumble. Also, the clutch pedal engages just off the floor. (Just checked and see it's a hydraulic system and the slave is external to the gearbox!)

There are no service records, except the Carfax, which says basically nothing, except that:

The transmission was replaced last fall. That, with the above issue, worries me. Would anyone replace a gearbox without also doing the clutch? Is my diagnosis off and I'm hearing gearbox noise or something else?

It sounds like it's supercharged. It's not. That sound is related to engine speed. Do these things have massive amounts of intake noise?

The brake pedal goes nearly to the floor before engaging (but, no death wobble).

There is a bit of seepage from the valve covers.

There's also a bit of seepage along the lower 1/3 or so of the rear diff.

No locker.

The weird:

I think it may have been owned by a volunteer firefighter at some point. ??? There are three wired electrical gadgets on the inside of each A pillar. They look like lights, but seem to have a lot of electronics under their clear covers for just being lights. I didn't flip the aftermarket switch on the dash to see what happened.
***

I've had a couple of old cars - two classic Minis and an early Bronco - and a bunch of regular cheapo cars. I'm not too worried about having to do the timing belt, brakes, suspension bits, regular maintenance, etc. I'm old enough now that I could afford to pay someone else to do something bigger like a clutch, if I didn't feel like dealing with it. But, I don't do welding or bodywork, which makes this one quite a bit more attractive.

The asking price is $8400. I mentioned the clutch issue to the dealer. He's going to have his mechanic check it out. If it needs a clutch, they'll do it and the price will be $8400 firm. (I assume I'll be able to tell if they try to scam me on the clutch. I can't think of any way of "fixing" a throwout bearing without actually fixing it. Unless it's something else...)

Anyway, I really liked the vehicle overall. $8400 seems fair to me, so long as there's nothing major wrong with it. The 4Runner looks like it would be near perfect for my needs, so if not this one, I'll probably wind up with another at some point.

Heyyo from a newbie and his SR5!

Hey guys, thanks for letting me in! Just wanted to say hey and introduce my new-to-me 2015 SR5. I've wanted a 4Runner for yeeeeears and finally made it happen. She's got miles but has been maintained, drives sweetly, and I'm absolutely obsessed. Bone stock for now, and I'll start slow with my mods (mostly because this is an insanely expensive passion to have and I don't have a princely income).
I can't wait to learn from y'all and update as we make progress on our mods and miles!

-Paul

15th post. Tired of seeing "junior" anything. Last mods:
- 5 days ago: Antman's Mod 4 "fog lights anytime" so I can use my Baja Designs Squadrons with high-beams when off-road at night
- Yesterday: Swapped out the poorly designed and made (dangerous) Icon Rear Shim guards for Rago Fabl lower shock guards. If you're wondering what my problem is with the Icon product look here:
https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3595144-post10.html
Next, on-board air. Already have the ARB CKMA12 compressor, just figuring out a DIY sPod-type wiring bus for under the hood.

Good luck with you journey, and safe travels

Greetings! Shameless long time lurker, and 99% of my time on this forum I was not yet an owner of a Toyota. On the last day of 2020 a Toyota Dealership nearby was desperate enough to accept my consumer offer and I walked out with Silver 2021 Off Road Premium (+KDSS).

This forum is very insightful as it contains a wealth of knowledgeable members with some terrific write ups and guides, but it’s the user submitted photos of all the builds that keeps me coming back!

Allow me to introduce myself...

“Sup!?”

Appreciate the welcome. I'm still getting used to the DRCC, not a fan of it slowing me down too far from the slower moving car in front of me. This requires me to move into the fast lane earlier than I normally would to maintain speed. I've also experienced the transmission 'hunting' because of me manually speeding up while the DRCC is engaged. While I'm *****ing and in no particular order, I miss the dual climate control, heads-up display, heated steering wheel, amazingly smooth acceleration, steering, and braking. The BMW is the ultimate driving experience IMHO...just not on dirt. That said, I spent a weekend with the 4Runner in Utah going wherever I wanted and I look forward to this summer in Colorado going up and down these mountains.

Should hopefully be picking up my 2021 TRD Off Road Package in Nautical Blue next weekend, it landed this week at the dealer. Won't be my first Toyota as I've previously owned a 1987 Land Cruiser BJ70 and a 1989 Land Cruiser BJ74. My brother owns a 2012 4Runner Trail, my sister a 2015 4Runner Trail and my mom a 2008 FJ Cruiser. So obviously my family likes Toyota SUV's lol

It’s not so bad

I don’t mind the restrictions. If I’m patient and use the site properly I’ll be welcome contributor in due time . Until then any questions I might have probably already have answers I can research

Hi from Melb Australia

Hi folks
Looking at buying a 4 runner, about 15k australian to spend on something around the 93 era.

Have already driven a 2.8 diesel auto, which had issues. So felt tired and slow. Also a 2.4 turbo diesel. This had 167 thous km, about 100 thous miles i guess. But had the cleanest underbody of any car i’d ever seen. Also felt slow.

Ive read the 2.4 is pretty underpowered so i guess i just wanted to confirm that myself behind the wheel.

Next step, drive the 3.0 v6. Wish me luck. Thanks for letting me join👍
