Through some research it looks like it could be a temp sensor issue, as the OD won't engage unless the engine and transmission are up to temperature.

The transmission works fine otherwise, so I'm leaning towards a sensor/electrical issue.

Looks like it could also be a faulty solenoid.

And it could also be an issue with the AT fluid, though the 06 and up use a sealed, "lifetime fluid" transmission. It sounds like people have fixed some issues by replacing the ATF though.

I'm trying to find out which temp sensor (ATF or engine) is used by the computer to determine when to allow overdrive to engage.

I'm also looking into getting new tires with my tax return! So I'd like to ask about the, looking at 255s but my Limited runs on 18" wheels so the options are pretty... limited.

My 4runner is lifted via Tacoma OffRoad OEM stuff. I did that work last summer, it lifted the front ~3" and I ordered Wheeler's Offroad rear coils to lift ~2" in the back. Sits nice and level now and looks MUCH better.

So now I'd like to finally replace the stock size highway tires with some taller A/T tires. I'm considering 255s to avoid any rubbing, gain height, fit in the spare tire well, and save weight at the wheels (might even be lighter than stock size!)

Hello, David here, coming to the forum for advise and future pointers for maintenance and projects. Currently I am in the middle of an issue with a 2002 4runner. I took it to a toyota dealer to do timing belt kit and when they returned it it developed a ticking ONLY in gear. It is either only in low RPM or you just cant hear it after a certain RPM. Took it back within 20 miles, they said the master level technician took a look at it and said everything is fine and there is nothing mechanically wrong with the vehicle and wouldnt stress too much on it. they said what it could be is exhaust pulse but verified there was no exhaust leak and manifold was bolted correctly and gaskets were good. I wouldnt stress too much on it but it only has 95K miles on it and has been perfect for the 1 1/2 years ive had it. The tick sounds like it comes from the front center of the waterpump/thermo when scoping with a stethoscope. Technician verified it wasnt valve lifters, trans, or arching from coils/plugs. Genuinely at a loss now as the vehicle has never made this noise before they worked on it and strangely enough only activates in gear rev/drive. Everything is stock and the car just received its first major service in my hands.

Hello! Joining the forum to help learn more about my wife’s 2016 4Runner!

We’ve already done some subtle mods that she’s okay with, but looking to get some help on an issue we are having where unlocking with the key fob doesn’t always unlock the front passenger door, but all other function properly! Excited to learn other things too!
