Well, I haven't hit my min. 15 posts before starting my own thread, so here I am at the bottom of the barrel trying to find an answer to my question (Life is hard enough when I have issues with my car and I have a day job, so spending hours trying to hit the min 15 posts is not an option)... anyway!....

2002 4runner Limited 4x4... My 4runner will not go into/out of 4x4. I even replaced the transfer case and it did nothing. I have to open the tcase actuator and physically put it into/out of 4x4, BUT the frickin dash light blinks constantly.

IS THERE A WAY TO DISABLE THE 4X4 FLASHING LIGHTS ON THE DASH?

Just picked up a new 2024 TRD Pro to begin my Overlanding adventures when i retire in Jun. First 2 mods were undercoating and ceramic tinting. Many more to come. Super excited to begin this new journey.

so i have a 3rd gen 1999 4runner with 249,634 miles it recently started to make noises so i went to a Toyota dealership and these are the prices they gave me to fix my car (note: this is my daily driver car its the only one i have and im kinda poor so buying new car isn't really an option)
repairs needed and cost
rear shocks: left rr shock broken: oldman emu 60028: cost= $630
axel seals: rr leaks and covered shoes replacement: cost $1503
ball joint replacement: lower rec. lower ball joints: cost= $915
driveshaft replacement: replace both front axel boots: cost= $1897
Alignment 4wheel: needs alignment: cost = $125
total cost from Toyota dealership = $5,070 plus tax
i know this place is on the pricier end of things but is it worth it to fix the car
or should i just buy a new one? mind you in Colorado a 2003 4runner with 360k miles is selling for about 7-8k

hey, I have a 4gen v-8, engine got adused and trashed,, trans, body, under gear all good,, any idea what kind of value is left in it? thoight maybe because of the limited v-8’s some one would want a project runner

THE BACKGROUND
As someone who has never worked on cars... never spent much time in a garage... and has maybe only one (semi) good off-roading story to share... this is not just Post #1, this is square one... but boy are we hitting the gas hard.

THE INCITING INCIDENT
My wife's dream car has been a 4Runner. Three weeks ago we swung by our local Toyota dealership to just look around... and, well, we were introduced to a 2024 TRD Off Road. 48 restless hours later we went back and added it to the family. -- What started out as a simple question for 'how can we make this ours'? has now devolved into three weeks of lighting small piles of cash on fire and bemoaning how Amazon's Same-Day delivery isn't fast enough!

IN SHORT
I don't know how much I can offer this group short of adding fodder to an "I'da never done it that way" thread. But I've already learned a ton and seeing some of the builds on here is only adding fuel to the fire...

if you're going to pay 5k in repairs...you said you were not in a position to buy a new one. cool. what about a better older one? But then again i would wonder if youre problems are solved for another 150k... i think its worth it to pay the 5k. but maybe shop around to the best non dealer, and perhaps a 4x4 shop, repair spot. maybe save some cash. Also consider if replacing strut is 830 or whatever. you will need another800-2.5k, right?

I guess I should introduce myself. I'm a remorseful seller of a 2012 FJ cruiser (purchased new In SoCal APR 2012). But a happy 5th Gen 4Runner TRD ORPP in Underground owner now. I've been a toyota owner for most of my life. My first truck was a 1984 SR5 extra cab 4x4 with Rancho suspension, back when i was Senior in HIgh School. Saved up for 2 years to get most of the money. She was amazing.... ALso had the best times with her too. the sand and the sun and the girls.... besides the zinka, those days were the best.

ANyway... I moved from CA to the midwest right before covid, and i have to say, Im looking forward to Heated steering wheel and seats and of course the de-icer. I made the decision to wait until the new updated 4runner came out, so i actually bought a Tundra TRD Pro, in Terra, on Feb 29th, 2024. It took me two weeks to absolutely hate the start stop hybrid stuff.... that fake v8 engine noise piped into the entertainment system.... ugh... i said wtf? I went and traded it in and got the 4runner bc I would rather have a long lasting, moderately inexpensive suv WITH A REAL ENGINE!

I took a tiny hit on the trade value but made it up in under msrp savings on purchase price. but it could have wrose..... i pulled a rabbit out of my hat... ask me about it I need posts lol

So to wrap up this oddly scritped ramble session here, I will end with the mods i have enroute:

Icon Stage 2 (2"rear spring) 3.5" lift with Billet UCAs .
Falken WildPeak AT4W (6ply duraspec) 285/70/17
OEM TRD Front Skid Plate
Ceramic Tint (20% Front / 5% Rear)

to do next:
Sliders... i will sell the tear away predator step tubes and ad Westcott TIG welded black DOM sliders on 20 deg angle, with the kickout.

Victory 4x4 Blitz front bumper with LED light bar & WARIN 10k winch
