It's basically a "lightly modded" 5th gen that is covered under factory warranty, for those owners who would rather spend a little upfront and have it be able to play on some trails without having to add a bunch of aftermarket/non-warrantable stuff to their brand new vehicle.
It's sort of a niche/stepping stone trim for those that want "modded" 4Runner that is under warranty to play with (I know some people aren't like

and want to wait until it's mostly paid off before they start sinking money into it ) It probably came about from seeing the majority of owners going for the typical "Satoshi," Bilistien 5100's, LT Tires, and other minor mods. So they decided why don't we just make that an available trim and sell it for a bit of a premium?

They could have at least thrown in some rock sliders, listened to customers/niche enthusiasts, etc. and put some better tires. Also the original promo vehicle had a sunroof and led dashboard display over the radio. I ended up having some custom springs made at Deaver Spring, so I'll get the front level even with my winch, bumper and stainless skids weight. I guess I was just disappointed there was almost no real tangible value aside from maybe the paint and suspension. The front shocks are not $1700 worth of coilover, if they were adjustable, that alone would have made me happy.
At least I can say it does better off road than my 2014 Pathfinder premium, although that is more comfortable on pavement, like a highlander ...
Improvements over my FJ? Well there is a 7 pin connector for the rear receiver...
I still don't believe a supercharger will ever be available, especially since, I believe the Tacoma is going with a different powertrain ...
I wish TRD had special dealers, like scion but for performance cars and trucks...
