4Runner vs. Lexus GX460

Thinking about switching out my 2005 4Runner SR5 with 220K miles on it (no mechanical issues at all since birth, but starting to rust out a bit) for a 2014 Certified Lexus GX460 with 15K miles on it for $43K. Thinking I could probably get another 100K miles from the 4Runner before it rusts out (I live in the Northeast and snow and salt are not great on cars) and get a Lexus GX or a 4Runner Limited. Any thoughts?

I'd go with the 4R. You won't pay half as much to fix it unfit breaks, you won't be afraid to break it, and it probably won't break as often. Plus, the mods are endless.

This is a 4runner forum so i would assume the majority would say get the runner. I don't own a Lexus so cant give an honest opinion.

I personally like the GX470's more than the GX460's -- and they're cheaper because older.

Have you looked into 470s? 43k is an awful lot of money to spend on a vehicle that depreciates as soon as you drive it away.

I have both the GX and a few 5th gen 4runners presently and I can honestly tell you I enjoy the GX more...for a few reasons.

#1 the V8
#2 the V8
and
#3 the V8

Thing is, if the GX you are looking at is certified you get a 100k warranty with it that includes a free rental car. We have our service work done at the local toyota dealer and dime for dime the GX is exactly the same to have worked on as the 4runner. Lets be honest, it is after-all only a 4runner in most aspects.

Things to consider
T4R LMTD VS GX460
V6 VS V8
Rear window rolls down vs Stationary back window
Rear hatch lifts up vs Rear hatch swings out
x-res suspension vs air ride suspension
heated front seats vs heated all rows
Avail Toytec BOSS kit vs Avail Toytec BOSS kit
Avail with cloth seats (SO) vs only avail in leather
Full time 4x4 vs full time 4x4
??? vs Center diff lock

I will tell you 43K for a certified GX is pretty high. I was finding certified GX460s all over the country for under 40k and even several under 32K still certified. I even have see one down the road from my house at the Lexus dealer that says "certified $34k".

If money isn't an issue, go with GX460 if you know it worth it. Personally, I would look for newer 4-runner.

We were after a '03 GX470 for $5500 but got stuck with the '99 T4R Limited for $3000. We liked the Lexus much better, but the 4runner is easier for the Ms to navigate.

Im a jeep man so they both seem to be inferior off the pavement but are both are great joys to drive on the streets.

This is what I would do in your shoes. I just don't see the reason to get a new 4Runner when you can get a certified hardly used GX with a V8 for the same price.

The GX is a sweet rig. It's pretty much a fancy 4Runner with a nice V8. Lots of aftermarket parts out there now for the GX rigs.

Can't go wrong with either but I'm bias towards the 4Runner because it's what I have. Haha. Hope you get what you want.

4r or gx

I've been shopping them as well. Honestly, I just feel the $$ saved on the 4R could be spent better on other things. I love them both.

GX. If I could, I would. Check out a few builds on 120 like 470SNC: "Blue Steel" GX470 expedition build - Toyota 120 Platforms Forum

More expensive and luxurious doesn't necessarily mean you'll like it better or even that it is better...

It's all personal choice of course, but for me, I've spent as much as $50k on things like the Grand Cherokee Overland, a BMW SUV, a loaded RAM truck, etc.... thinking I wanted extra luxury. Over and over with all my different purchases, all I could think of was having a vehicle that is just meant to be less frills and more rugged, so I did the 4Runner, and I love it the most of damn near every vehicle I've owned.

if you do not go off road too much, take that V8+fully loaded 4runner+few extra options (like rain sensors)=GX for the price of new Limited
It still the same car, but V8 . I had Chance to drive GX for awhile, and dynamic is way better than on my t4r 5gen
