FJ Curiser to New 4runner member
Well I just purchased my 18 4runner with 11k miles on it. I am not a first time Toyota truck owner. Just sold my 08 FJ with 191k miles in less than a week, got over 55% of the purchase price in 2009 with only 4500 miles on it. So change is good but need to modify my 4runner to make it as I like it. Some of the items I need to get done is maintenance items including changing all the engine and gear oil to synthetic. I also like to get the 4runner level by adding 5100 on second notch with 1/4" spacer on the passenger side and 3/8" spacer on the driver side to get rid of typical lean. I hope I get on this forum as I did on the FJ forum!

Congratulations. We're about to embark on this same journey. We're going from a 2007 Voodoo Blue FJ, to a 2019 Voodoo Blue TRD Pro.

I was under the impression that the FJ was/is more desirable than the 4R. What were your motivations (aside from high'ish miles) in switching? Wht are the advantages of the new car - aside from being new?

Welcome! How do you like the 4R compared to the FJ?

I just made a similar trade the other nite: 2010 FJ to 2019 TRD Off-road Premium. I bought the FJ new in 2009 and it had just over 87k miles. I bought the 4Runner mostly because after ten years, I wanted something newer, and the one I bought was already lifted, etc the way I wanted. I also figured that after ten years, the value of the FJ was going to start dropping more rapidly, so I was making a ten year decision since I keep my vehicles for a long time. I'm still second guessing myself a little, and leaving the FJ at the dealer was not easy. I almost backed out a few times while crunching numbers with the sales guy. I loved my FJ! If Toyota was still importing the FJ's, I would have passed on the Runner and bought a new one, no question.

I just did the same switch..after 12 yrs in an FJ (2007 and 2014 ) I went to the 4runner ( my 2nd ..the 97 4R had over 300,000 mi) I live in NJ with a lot of time in FL...don't do much off road and less on mountains and rocks..I need a daily driver that is reliable and doesn't get stuck in snow..I LOVED my FJ...however I now have greater visibility on the highway (commute to FL ), nicer ride (I am older or just old), sun roof, rear window that just goes down into tailgate (easier to drop the surfboard in), better sound system++. I usually do the drive to Fl. in a day about 13+hours and I usually get to my destination with about 1 gallon of gas left and was always anxious if I had traffic delays!!with the larger fuel tank I won't pull into Palm Coast with the gas light on. Finally I replaced 3 windshields in my 2 FJ's I have been driving around with a cracked windshield for at least 1/2 of the time I owned my "14".(got a stone hit and crack 2 mo. after replacing the original one)...I don't have e locker or crawl control on my 4Runner..but I rarely used rear diff lock and never used crawl control...so that's the story on the switch.

I'll bet it's tough for someone to let go of the FJ.......I have had a Chevy Tracker zr2 since 2001, often looked at the FJ over the years and considered upgrading to it.....but never pulled the trigger. I'm now, finally, looking to upgrade......love the look/capability of the FJ, but "everybody" insists the 4runner is the best possible choice for me: mostly highway/city, but I love to spend time off-road, nothing serious or technical. I'm guessing you made the right choice.
