Buying help

Hi everyone! I’m in the midst of the buying process and would like some advice before I pull the trigger.

I’ve been wanting to join the 4Runner bandwagon for a couple years now and am finally in the position financially to do so. I’ve spent countless hours reading through every relevant forum I could find and appreciate all the knowledge shared thus far.

I narrowed my search to a 4th gen V8 and think I have found the perfect one. It is a 2006 V8 and has been babied it’s whole life, but it has 205,000 miles on it. I negotiated $1,000 off the asking price and am at $8,500 right now. The truck has a clean carfax and I am having a mechanic check it out tomorrow. I just really can’t afford to have it die on me in the near future, so I thought I’d reach out for y’alls help.

Here is the description of the ad and the recent preventative maintenance:

“Excellent condition and meticulously maintained. All preventative maintenance taken care of on time. Everything works. Great for a daily driver and ready for more adventure.

Basics:
2006 limited with leather, nav, sunroof and a V8. 205,000 miles, Mobil 1 oil changes, all services done on time or early. Exterior is in great shape with minor trail rash. Interior also in great shape. No cracks in dash. Driver seat bottom needs repair.

Mods:
Bilstein 6112 front coilovers and King coils, Bilstein 5160 rear shocks with Icon coils, SPC UCA, 5th gen brakes and trail wheels with Falken Wildpeak AT 33s (7k miles), ARB front bumper, lifetime LED cubes, all led light, wired for fridge, etc.

Service since 180k:
Timing belt, water pump, HVAC clutch fan, alternator, pcv valve, radiator, all hoses, pulleys, belts and fluids. Tie rods, rebuilt SPC front UCA, new oem LCA, new king 700lb. coils.”

What do y’all think? He’s got over 4K in mods done (that I would have done myself regardless) I appreciate you taking the time to read this over for me!

If he's got 4k worth of mods in it (that you would have eventually done yourself), has done the timing belt, and everything seems to ride alright I believe you've answered your own question. That 4.7 can go for a million miles if you maintain it properly.

Do you know why the guy is getting rid of it?

Thanks for the feedback and yes I am feeling good about it, but am a newbie to 4Runners and thought it wouldn't hurt to seek advice from the pros.

He is selling it because he is a real estate agent and needed a more "professional" car for clients to ride in. He bought a new 5th gen and wishes he could keep this one as a trail rig, but couldn't justify it financially.

Can’t start my own thread so I’m gonna try to post it here

I’m looking to trade my 3rd gen 2000 Limited for a 1st gen. Found a guy not too far from me willing to trade his 86 with rebuilt trans and engine and it’s in decent cosmetic shape with everything intact. Good trade or not?

How reluctant was the seller to knock off the $1000? I prefer to buying used from a private seller, so I'm wondering how hard it is to negotiate.

The guy was willing to do a straight trade but after I asked him for details, he mentioned that the it had been in a flood and I backed out of the deal.

Ooh yeah, that’s definitely a hard no.

I have only changed the plugs on it. Normal oil change schedule.

That 4R must fly with that v8 in it.

If you are going the build/mod route does it make since to buy one out of the 3 year/36k warranty? Mods might moot the warranty and you can skip eating the 1-3 year depreciation by buying used though Toyotas hold their value very well.

Buying my first 4runner

So I have driven Jeeps my whole life and looking for something more reliable and I can put miles on while making a few small mods : 2-3 inch lift and a nice wheel and tire set up, that type of thing. My budget isn’t huge and I found a 2010 with 180k at a Toyota dealership and the car fax looked really impressive every oil change and every tire rotatation is on there and all done at a Toyota dealer. I was wondering if this is a good idea? Or what I should be looking at to make sure this is the right purchase for me. They are asking 10k for it and it would also be my daily driver. I would want this to last to 300k and I know they can just trying to protect myself before I get too attached or convince myself this is a great deal when it might not be. Thanks

Sounds like this guy has added the right mods that you would do anyway. Add that with the attention to maintenance and I think you will be in this 4Runner for a long time. let us know what happens.
