Chassis Saver is a great product for covering bare metal after you clean it up and it does help to stop rust. Fluid Film seems to be a good choice also.

See ya,

Those original pics look much better than most I've seen, my '04 included. I used POR15 after extensive prep work (including new steel structure for areas that were already rusted through), but unfortunately mine seems to be rusting from the inside out in spots. I've seen the Eastwood products with the spray "straws" to try to coat the inside of the frame rails, but I'd imagine prepping those inside surfaces is almost impossible. I've thought about trying to just spray used motor oil or similar into the rails, something that doesn't need to adhere like paint

Rust scares me more than any other damage to my possessions, be they vehicles or firearms. And even with that in mind, the OP's photos looked pretty tame. But I did just order some INOX and LAMOX, based on the video link attached. Sounds like good stuff to put on my new 4Runner when it arrives. For the first time in decades, I now live in a state that puts salt on roads.

My last 4Runner was a 2011 SR5 in Chicago, where salt is spread during winter by the ton. That said, the frame of the 11-year-old 4Runner barely had any surface rust. I mostly sprayed the frame at car washes after almost every time the snow plows and their salt spreaders were on the roads unless temps were sub-zero. My new TRD ORP will be brushed with Blaster lanolin undercoating that a friend in New York (another salty state) recommended.

Being from SoCal we’re a little spoiled. The only problem I see with that amount of rust is when you actually go to work on it. On my old 3RD Gen the sway bar end links snapped on me because the hardware was seized.

From the month of delivery and every year thereafter, I treat my cars with a rustproofing product. I've used Zeibart, Krown, Corrosion-Free and Rust-Check. All had good results but some more messy than others.

Seems pretty clean - for a car thats not in the west. As others have said, some wire-wheeling will do wonders

It doesn't look bad. I'd coat where the frame paint has chipped off to reveal the primer though.

Hoping to find a rust free example when the time comes.

New York Salt

Having just traded my ‘16 Tacoma in on a new ORP, this thread is a little disheartening. The truck was recalled for inspection of the frame, where they applied generous quantities of seam sealer in various areas of the frame - right over the un-prepped rust. Pretty sure it did nothing. Anyway, they deemed the frame acceptable and sent me on my way. No pics to share unfortunately, but it looked far worse than the OP’s 4Runner.

Around me, I think it’s a calcium chloride brine they apply on the major roads, in addition to granular salt. Don’t know if that’s better or worse for our frames.

I plan to have Woolwax installed. I'm in the Midwest, and rust is always a concern.
