Finally a 3rd gen 4Runner owner! About time!

Hey hey all!

I've been wanting a 4Runner ever since I saw a friend of mine's silver 2000 SR5 inherited from his pops way back when. Moving to Colorado a couple of years ago reignited that dream, so I went a-searchin' for my future camping/ski rig. And finally, this summer, money and Craigslist hit the right mix and I found myself the proud owner of a 2001 4Runner Limited with 233k miles, me being the 3rd owner.

Here's a photo of where it was and where it's at. My friend (in the photo) checked out the car for me in CA before I bought/brought it back to CO. I'd like to post a build thread sometime soon since I've done more with the guts than the exterior, but the only thing I think is going to change from the newer photo are some rock sliders and maybe a roof rack/box next summer to keep camping gear in. I went wheeling at Jenny Creek this summer as my inaugural trail, and banged up the running board on the right side. Sometimes I wonder if I banged up the board intentionally to rationalize getting the sliders?!

Looking forward to learning from all of you and seeing your rigs get badder!

Have a 99 4runner that’s my daily driver and it’s amazing! Awesome decision you won’t be disappointed I can tell you that! 3” lift and 33’s are the bread and butter for 3rd gen 4runner’s. That’s what I have and I wouldn’t want it any higher that’s for sure. If you aren’t at least 5’10” you’ll want some sort of running boards if you decide to lift it, but I’d recommend taking off the clunky stock ones for sure. Other than those things, I’d say try to customize it because there’s a lot of 4runner’s out there so make this one stand out!

That's awesome! I love driving it, the way the dash and gauges look, it just feels immediately familiar even though it's almost 20 years old!

Thanks for the info on the lifts and tires! That's good intel to know that that's how far to push it. At the moment, I've got 2" in the front and 2.5" in the back as my new-to-this-mods-game lift, which thankfully gets me to all the campsites that I never could reach with my 2003 sedan. And got 32s, but now thinkin' I should've gotten 33s! I use it as my daily driver too now and got nervous when people wrote about tire rubbing/having to cut out pieces in that area to accommodate.

You're so right about trying to make it stand out, it's going to be fun trying to figure out further what to do (so many 3rd gen Runners in CO! ) Cheers!

Thanks!! There are 1.25” Spidertrax spacers in there on recommendation from a friend. I love how it handles and looks!
