i am 70 yrs old and new at this forum stuff. in the book it says to only put on the back tires but on line people say in super bad weather you can put on all 4 if in 4X4 mode...is this true ? and also do i have to use the s type snow chains which are low profile for wheel area ?

I would suggest only the rear tires. that should get your through damn near anything unless its just far too deep/heavy

Use cables or type S. All 4 in 4wd would give you the best traction. Personally I wouldn't want to be driving if conditions warranted chains on all 4 wheels and 4x4. With good tires you should be able to get by with just 4x4.

Pretty sure the manual says put chains on the rear only, due to potential for them hitting the control arms on the front. Someone else will probably be able to confirm.

I bought a set of chains for the rear, but never use them. Only got them for the legal requirement to carry them. The standard nitro terras suck in snow. I put on 4 studded snow tires for winter use to get me to the ski areas or over the pass. Never had a problem and traction is awesome.
