New member here with some newbie questions

Hello All - I am a new member from SoCal and joined the group to learn some tips and tricks before buying my first 4Runner. I am thinking about buying a new 2021 model by the end of the year. It would be a car for long camping trips with some offroading here and there. I was thinking about the TRD Pro trim as the one that would fit the description. Are there any must have options I should remember when building it? Any other tips and tricks for the first time buyer? Thanks!

After you get it, take it out and put it through the paces. You will be pleased with its performance and capability in stock form and also get a better understanding of what mods will be a better fit for you.
There is a ton of info

What Spartacus said...

I'm in CO and have done some gnarly trails already in my stock SR5, lookup Tin Cup Pass (videos 2019 or newer) and Imogene. I ran Tin Cup 100% stock and Imogene with sliders and made it through both with just minor scratches (mostly all my fault for being a scrub) and a couple because i couldn't clear things. Most folks that saw me running those trails stock were surprised how capable they are stock and so was I.

I'm partly in the same boat as you, i picked mine up for camping/fishing/road trips and my buddies got me hooked on off-roading too. Take it out where you'll likely be going most and you'll find your gaps then fill them as you go, that's what i've been doing for the past 2 years.

Looking at the options though, they all seem personal preference, nothing that'll really get you going farther. Running boards are nice - finding take offs are really easy for 1/3 the price from mfr though, same with cross bars. I do like having all weather mats makes cleaning a breeze, i got mine really cheap from the dealership when buying so i went for it since they were about the same price as other brands.

Do you know if there are any major differences in off-road capabilities between the SR5 with 4x4 added and TRD Pro trims? Is it possible to get to the level of the TRD Pro trim from SR5 with your own mods?

Major differences above SR5 are the locker, multi terrain select, and crawl control. All of these can be had in the Off Road (or Trail in older models), Off Road Premium, or Pro.

So a good compromise is the Off Road (regular or premium), which is way cheaper than a Pro but still has the off-road extras. The only functional difference is the suspension, which you can upgrade down the line.
