Hi Bob2,

Congrats on making it to 650K! A couple of questions if you have time to answer:

Looking at your service records:

1) Did you ever have your radiator replaced?

2) Did your ever have a transmission cooler installed?

3) Do you use regular or synthetic motor oil?

4) Any other maintenance tips you could share with us that we could use to help get our trucks ready for those golden years?

You must be a very proud owner, 650K is one heck of an achievement!

Oly4runner,
Answers to your questions;
1. I have never replaced the radiator. Dealer flushes and replaces the coolent every 60,000 miles. Tip I use a custom cut piece of bug screening placed in front of the radiator. I clean it every time that I wash the 4runner thats all.

2. The only transmission cooler that is installed is the factory one in the radiator.

3. I use regular motor oil, Quaker state high miler that the dealer recommended when I hit 500,000 miles costs a little more but worth it. when I bought my 4runner synthetic oil was out of my price range. Dealer does not recommend switching from regular to synthetic after 50,000 miles.

4. The only maintenance tips that I adhere to religiously are'
A. keep the exterior clean washed and waxed/polished.
B. Keep the interior clean.
C. Only let the dealer work on your 4runner. Some of you will say that the dealer is to expensive "true" but he knows the 4runner better than you and has the proper tools to perform the job.
D. Do the maintenence when it is due (I don't change the oil every 3,000 miles like the book says, I change it at 5,000 miles every 5-6 weeks.
E. Here is the most important tip "DON'T ABUSE YOUR 4RUNNER BY ASKING IT TO DO THINGS THAT ARE ABOVE IT'S CAPABILITIES".

truly impressive. As long as you haven't spent $20k at the dealership for all of their "services" i'd say you've definitely gotten your money's worth out of your ride.

Dealer Costs

Nope, In the 13 years that I have had the 4Runner I have spent a whopping $5.866.45. in repairs, oil changes, scheduled tuneups, belt replacements. This does not include tires which I have spent $4,565.00 for 5 sets of Michelins.
Grand total $10,431.45 or $802.42 per year. this is well within my expectations.

P.S. I am meticulious in record keeping, have every receipt since the 4Runner was new.

Just rolled 652,000 miles yesterday 4/10/12.

WOW! I just bought my 99 and was a little worried it had over 200,000 miles. Not so worried anymore.

Your 4Runner is worthy of a Toyota T.V. commercial montage representing the brand's heritage of quality and longevity! Write Toyota a letter and see what happens. You never know. They usually base those commercials on real live write-ins from brand loyalists.

Those are the numbers I was really curious to see. THAT is incredible. It would still be neat if you were at 650k and had spent 3 times that much on maintenance....but only $5800?! That is amazing.

It also helps a lot that you live in Texas. No 3rd gen 4runner would have lasted that many miles on salted roads unless it was literally washed every single day of it's life.

Congratulations on the mileage. I've always believed that a vehicle will last longer if it is used for what it was built for - to be driven! I've seen a Corolla or two with upwards of 400,00 on them and a Volvo with the same, but you're heading for 700k - awesome.

The million dollar question for me is:

Have you ever replaced the 'lifetime' fuel filter?

650k - Wow!

How's the oil consumption. Adding any between changes?

This is possibly the best 3rd generation thread ever. I'm speechless and more in love with these trucks than ever.

RC57,
My 4-Runner uses about 1/2-quart between oil changes (5,000 miles).

To up date all I just replaced the lower ball joints and control arm bushings dealer cost $350.00.

Front end alignment $100.00.

Stupid power antenna plastic gear stripped again, dealer wants to charge $65.00 to replace antenna.

I intend to take it to a detail shop and let them do a complete detail inside and out on May 26, 12, the dealer wants to do a promo on the 4-Runner we'll see if I get some perks from him.

Other than that no problems.
