Snow Camping

All you Nor Cal runners, do you go camping in the snow or just play around and have some fun? Maybe a little bit of both?

Dont know many that camp in it.

As far as doing a run/playing in it. Plenty do!

When, depends on when someone puts a run together, usually where and how much snow, usually with it being fresh, then see if/how far you can make it before getting stuck, some, farther than others.

Camping in the snow is great so long as it’s not sloppy wet snow or really windy out.

I proposed to my wife on a winter camping trip in Red River Gorge, Ky. Beautiful, snow and Ice waterfalls.

I do have some extreme cold weather camping experience from the military. We did 45 days twice above the arctic circle in January/February

Come to the Midwest! We have enough snow to go around. This spring I woke up in my RTT to icicles and -5 degrees on a February excursion along the MO/IL border...

Have you Climbed Mt. Shasta?

You cant drive up, but camping in the snow at 11K ft elevation while star gazing is the best.

I have not climbed Mt. Shasta. I bet the view was awesome up there. I'm guessing you used snowshoes to get up there. Or did you just hike it? Definitely have camped in some light snow in Lassen. I've been checking the weather on lower bucks lake. Starting to get cold.

I'm a little farther north, in Salem, Oregon. No camping, but did a very good snow run with a group of Jeeps. Had a 1984 4Runner give me a little help.

They were running 35s and 37s with 40s on the '84. Went anywhere they wanted. Great group of helpful off roaders.

On the way out, I got out of the two track and got high centered front to back, sitting on my skid plates.
Never do a snow run alone. I got help 3 times, they went on and had to help each other a few times.

Yeah, can't stress enough about not going alone. Every year people go missing in the Sierras because they went alone up a road and got stuck miles away from help.

I find that camping in the winter is THE best time to go...especially when the elements get pretty crazy. There will be less people and arguably, the best scenery of the year.

If you’re interested, I just wrote an article for trail4runner.com titled Winter Camping Gear: 8 Essentials for Overlanding and Off-Roading.

Hope you find it a good resource before heading out!
