Is it possible to buy X-REAS shocks from anywhere but the dealer?

I pose the question because it would suck if one should die or something and you had to go through the dealer to replace because they need to be replaced in pairs and with dealer pricing that would be FUBAR... does anyone else sell them, also would any mechanic be able to swap them? I'm trying to pose these important questions before I even buy my Runner just to make sure I wont have to buy yet another car quickly after this.

Dealer only, but quite frankly I think your fears are not warranted about XREAS. I've done a LOT of hard offroading and I've had ZERO problems with XREAS. I'm not talking about an occasional mud hole or cow pasture but serious hard flexing, rock crawling Colorado 10,000ft + offroading. No problems or complaints.

You can always buy the shocks from guys who removed theirs. Or alternatively you can shop around to get some.

The XREAS is expensive, but should last a long time. The shocks are around $150 a piece and you can swap them yourself if needs be. Or you can go back to normal shocks, or better yet you can upgrade to aftermarket shocks and coils like OME, DR, SAW, Downey, etc. I upgraded mine to OME and removing the shocks was not that bad at all, replacing them should not be either. Just remember to make sure all the wheels are hanging before disconnecting any shock from the XREAS line. See the OME thread for info.

Lots of choices so dont worry.

XREAS shocks are monotubes, which means that they should last quite a long time, even with off-roading. They should last longer than the regular shocks on non-XREAS 4runners.

As stated above by Bulldog, there are many choices. If you want just a simple change without going XREAS route, then i would consider Bilstein shocks.
