I just don't like the gas cap location much because one can spill gasoline on the area often (i almost inevitably spill gasoline around the area everytime i put gas in my cars)...although this may not damage anything, but i wonder if the gasoline may rot the plastic tube over the long haul????

I'll rephrase my statement, I see the diff breather each time I add gas and that allows me to see if my diff is having issues such as a broken seal wherein the oil is spewing out the breather cap (think locker). In addition, it allows me to see that the cap is still in good shape and, if I feel inclined, I can double check that it's still able to open. Of course, checking to see that the hose is still attached to the diff is another story.
As for gasoline spilling ... are you serious when you say that you do it often?!? Come on, Man. I guess I pay more attention to what I'm doing and have rarely spilled any. You're serious? Then I fully understand why you're against the idea. Maybe some pumps act differently than others and shut off sooner? With all due respect, maybe you should try full service instead?
Personally, I don't go to full service gas bars, and when I do, I fill it myself. if they try to stop me, I drive another block. In addition, my cap is located to the top left and so I'd have to have a major muscle spasm in order to hold the nozzle on enough to get a drop down the valve. Yeah, I guess it could happen, but it's highly unlikely because by then I'd be covered in gasoline and the attendant in the cash cage would have smashed the big red button!

I guess that you can check it easier...but again, shouldn't you be checking the other breather caps too?? Why do you think that the rear diff breather cap is anymore prone to failure than the others (if you install it right)?? Yeah, you have a locker, but i still don't see why you need to check it so often. My G has lockers everywhere with breather tubes at the top of the engine bay...i don't check them at all until time for oil change.
As for gas spilling, i guess that either the pumps i go to is not as good as yours, but yeah, i get a few drops here and there when i pull it out. I assume that it is from the gasoline that is still left over in the tube. And i do shake the nozzle to make sure that all the gasoline is in the tank BEFORE pulling it out. Oh well, maybe i am just an old man with tremors. I have not seen (nor ever used) full service stations in a long time around here.

I thought this thread was about (rear) breather install, not about vehicle maintenance. But yeah, check your vehicle for defects (breather caps and whatever else) as needed.

You miss my point...if you're not checking your other breather tubes at every gas stops, then why are you checking the rear diff breather at every gas stop?? You do not check the other breather tubes because you do not have to, right? Then, why do you feel the need to check the rear diff breather so often?? In other words, the rear diff breather should be just as durable (and reliable) as the other breather tubes on your 4runner. You do not need to check it at all...thus, this is why i prefer the rear taillight housing over the gas cap location. The rear taillight housing stays dry from the elements (and gasoline corrosion?). The same cannot be said about the gas cap location. And since there is really no need to check the breather tube/cap often (if at all in between oil changes or off-road events), the gas cap location does NOT really provide any benefit over another location.

The rear cap is in my face when I fill up. The rest are not. Give it up. You have your opinion. I have mine. The audience can judge for themselves. To each his own, no?
I'm suddenly remembering why I wasn't active on this forum for quite a while. .

That's fine...we're just having a good discussion about what you commented on earlier...not sure why you got all pissy all of a sudden?? Again, you're missing my point...but oh well....
Yeah, maybe next time, you will remember sooner rather than later because we just wasted both of our times.

I just finished doing this mod. I ran the hose up the fuel filler line, but zip tied it below the rubber around the filler cap instead of poking it through. What a pain it was reaching up there to do it. I couldn't remove the wheel well liner because it is rivited on intsead of bolted. How did you guys who did the same way manage? I used 3/8" fuel line hose and it was easy to slip it over union and even easier to to slip it over the new breather - no hot water or WD40 needed. I clamped it down tight to make sure it is well sealed and stays on.
I did notice that the new breather doesn't jiggle like the stock one. From reading this thread I understand the jiggle one wouldn't work well even if extended becuase it would shut itself when the axel cools potentially sucking water past the seals. But I also noticed that the extended breathers from the front diff (in engine bay) are the jiggle type. Does this mean they are not good for deep water and should be changed?

They all should seal... test it out if in doubt ... I have a question pertaining to the breather in the storage/jack housing .. how loud is it when it does overheat and "pop?"
Further more.. when it does pop .. then its discharging heated up diff fluid gasses .. so It might look cleaner ..but I would think that for one the "pop" would freek the wife out and for two the smell would ablsolutly suck.. "if you have ever had the pleasure of changing diffrental fluids .

There shouldn't be any poping noise with the breather part suggested on the first page. It is a two way breather, which doesn't seal up. The stock breather, which does move (jiggles) doesn't make any noise either.

I too have done the rear diff breather relocation. Its on my 03 V8. I used the two toyota parts recommended (thank you). I also used six feet of 5/16 fuel line and one hose clamp on the hose attaching to the diff itself.
The new toyota breather is a plastic two-way which makes the most sense to me. I put it in the gas door. I put a small slit in the rubber housing around the fuel tube with a razor and put a little wd40 on it too. The hose slid straight in with the wd40 and yes, run it down, not up. Gravity will help run the tube for you. Used a couple wire ties. Leave a little play in the hose for articulation!
My original breather was definitely corroded enough to where it was doing nothing. No air in. No air out. Probably, not a huge deal since one of my axle seals has been leaking since I got the 4runner. The breather being frozen may have had something to do with why the axle seal went out anyways. Axle seals fixed tomorrow!!
Also, I do have the one factory, metal, noisy breather under my hood. I guess it is connected to the front diff.??
Has anybody done the breather relocation on the 5 spd. transmission or the transfer case on the 4th gen.??

I agree with your speculation about a screwed up vent contributing to the axle seal issue. See my post, about 7th down, here: 30k service
Great Scuba post here: SCUBA DRIVER MOD: Breather tubes - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum It's an FJC post but it has great pics and an FJC is the same as the T4R for this purpose...

I found a rubber gasket that goes into this area from under the truck and cut a hole in it just a little smaller than my tubing, so that it was water tight when installed. I know that this is a little more tubing, but it's a lot cleaner in both looks and dirt, plus the wife won't ***** about you drilling holes into the truck every chance she gets. If I ever get enough water in that thing to get to the vent, then I've got bigger problems on my hands then worrying about the dif.
It was a fun and easy mod, and cheap to.

Zig, Would you happen to have a picture of the rubber gasket location you ran yours up threw? I was looking at one by the bumper (driver side) but I couldn't see how it actually gets to the jack location. Thanks.
Or Thai, or others who put their breather behind the driver side tail light, how'd you route it up there? Also how do you remove the tail light, I'm not seeing the same screws as the 3rd gen (the two on the side).

I have mine by my gas cap and I've never had a problem with it and I think I've spilled gas a few times in 5 years of ownership but nothing that could cause issues.
If there is one breather htta should be monittored over the others it would be the reaer since that's seems to be the one that gives the most headaches with 3rd gens and causes axle seal failure so I do like it where I can see it but behind the light is good also.

I have planed on doing this mod but i have not yet. I have a question to those of you who have. Have you ever had your vehicle serviced or diff fluid changed at a Toyota dealership and have they ever mentioned the breather or do you think it will be a problem with them? The reason i ask is this seems like something they should of done from the factory after all the front diff has 1 extended in to the engine bay as does the t-case or tranny right? I know this will be at the least cheap insurance but do you think this will be a questionable mod at the dealership for warranty service down the rd if needed? I guess i can just do my own maintenance like fluid change. Any input,
