Does anyone have pictures of running the breather up to the rear tail light? Getting my 1997 4runner back tomorrow and would like to extend the breather. Just did brakes and wheel bearings because seals were leaking.

This is one of the first things I have done to every Toyota I've owned. Nice to have the part # reference here so I can do it again. Parts on the way.

We did a complete breather (scuba mod) relocate on our FJ. Should be about the same for a 4Runner.
Here's a short video we made;

Did this mod last night to my 4 month old (to me) 3rd gen - my old crusty breather was just an open tube, lol.
Guess I don't have to worry about pressure building up. Also changed the diff oil, who knows how much water and junk was in it.
I couldn't find the replacement breather that I bought for the end, so I left it open for now. It should be fine for a bit until I can get a new breather to stick in the end, right?

I have a few photos in this thread and there's also other great info to help with the breather extension... Rear Diff Breather Mod
It's very straightforward. I've been busy/lazy to snap some actual photos of the breather but will try to get some soon.

This mod lets you drive through deeper water without drawing any into your axle.

I have always slipped the old breather end into the hose and zip tied it secure. I have not had a problem over the last 9 years with lots of off road days and overland trips.

Any breather relocation that uses push lock fittings is asking for failure. Band clamps on barb fittings would be the way to go. I was looking at some of the kits out there and laughing at how worse off the vehicle will be if installed.

Does anyone know of a decent but cheap breather for the 5th Gen? Who has some good suggestions for a decent one?

Throwing something out there for the gas cap location for rear axle. I initially peeled off the gasket to see where line would go and it of course went into the jack/tools area. Realized quickly the the hole needs to be cut right next to the nozzle (I used a screw driver to push the nozzle away a bit while cutting/running the tube). Cutting right next to it bypasses the jack/tool area and goes right to underside of truck. WD-40 helped to slide the tubing through with ease as someone else mentioned. Once the hole was cut, it was a 15 min mod.
Thanks for all the info here guys.
