suspension lift or body lift

I have a question about lifting...

Can someone briefly give an outline of the advantage/disadvantage of a body lift vs. suspension lift.

Seems like most people here do suspension lift (i.e. cornfed, revtek...), but very few (I think I just saw one) do body lifts.

thanks,
j

Body lifts are almost entirely for looks (and I don't really like that because all you do is get to see more of the frame.)

If you are doing it to enhance off-roadability than suspension lifts are the way to go.

body lift pros:
retains stock suspension
easiest to lift
ability to add larger tires
cheap

body lift cons:
separation from body and frame
can only lift 1.5"

suspension lift pros:
more travel (in most cases) due to improved suspension setup
ability to add larger tires
safer lifting option

suspension lift cons:
installation is not as easy as body lift
expensive
can only lift 3"

I'm sure there's more but I'm having a brain fart. Personally if you're looking to lift, always go suspension first and if you still need more, go body lift. not the other way around.

It depends on the goal for your rig. I put a BL (along with 4in susp lift) on my old Ranger just for a bit more tire clearance - If I could have don it again I would have just cut the fenders. Turned out to be pretty top heavy- remember you want that center of gavity as low as you can. I am also not a fan of the frame showing so much - not much of a problem for a Ranger but the 4Runner has some frame hanging below the body to start with (much like a GMC). Most pick a BL for the low cost.

Good luck.

Body lifts also interfere with the stock geometry of the stability of the vehicle where replacing the suspension has much less effect and is safer for a DD.

yeah, body lifts are basically useless, although i hear with my current suspension, if i put on a 1" i could tuck 35" tires, but i dont know if it is worth it
