2019 will be a year I plan to enjoy off-roading with other 4Runner addicts like myself. I have a 3rd gen 2000 4Runner running Toytec and SCS wheels. It’s a beast. I just bought a 5th gen which I plan to make my 2019 build. Instagram @mcatgt

Here are some:

--don't confuse going out or even trail runs with the sport of rock crawling. Crawling over rocks and ledges on some trails is not the same as the sport of driving trails that are essentially obstacle courses or choosing the hardest lines elsewhere for the heck of it. There can be overlap, but it is rare, it is usually different rigs, different setups, different compromises, etc.

--don't confuse the lower 48 with Australia. You can overland all you want but you don't have to overland to get anywhere (1-2 nights remote camping is not really overlanding). You can carry all you want but there is no need to. The Australians don't have this choice.

--Travel light: less likely to break something, less need for suspension upgrades, better sand performance, fewer performance issues on road. Seems especially appropriate for 5th generations due to being V6 only. People who want an Australian style overlanding rig should consider the GX 470, 460, or the 200 series. Just sayin' as lots of complaints could have been easily avoided that way.

--Read the 4Wheeler Bible by Jim Allen. It is not recent any more but still covers all the basics. A lot better than watching random youtube videos.

--Use 4x4 trail guides. They also have useful intros with all that you actually need. Watch out for "scratch" or "pinstripping" in trail descriptions if you have good paint. Chances are that "likely brush" in a description published 5 years ago is guaranteed pain nowadays.

--Use good judgment before modding. The aftermarket industry makes lots of claims about lots of things. That's how they make money. About the one thing that is beyond dispute is that the stock tires are inadequate...beyond that...it all depends on goals and frequency of use and also on the generation and the trim. Also, the greater the hassle to get out, the less one will get out.

--Use good judgment on trail. If you are not sure and no one with more experience is with you, turn back.

--Remember that weather can change trails dramatically, especially in the desert. Also, don't be in a wash during or after rains.

--Avoid popular trails on weekends, especially if not yet pinstripped and/or scratched and/or if the traffic is UTV/ATV traffic.

--If solo, let someone you trust, ideally with some idea about offroading, know where you are going, your route, and your cutoff time. If it is a really remote area, do not improvise, stay the route. MUCH better: have a two-way satellite messenger and have a friend make sure their phone is on while you are away. Be nice and send an "all OK" message as soon as back on pavement/in cell range.

--If you are on a rock crawling trail, you know your stuff. If you are not a crawler and you are driving a hybrid trail, remove any rocks you have needed to stack. It is bad etiquette to make that kind of trail easier.

--By the same token, it is okay to improve a difficult overlanding trail that is driven for scenery/camping.

--Established bypasses are fine, but DO NOT LEAVE THE TRAIL and DO NOT DRIVE CROSSCOUNTRY except in the few areas where this is allowed. Don't be the person driving over alpine flowers.

--While it is the general rule that uphill traffic has the right of way, bigger groups also have the right of way and sometimes it is much more sensible for uphill traffic to back up than for the descending vehicle to do so.

Do not forget the most important of offroading tip of all: Know how to use your equipment before you need it!

Find a simple offroad area to test all of your vehicle's features. Ensure you are comfortable operating all of them before you set off on that "epic trek." This should include testing all of your auxiliary equipment such as winches, high lift jacks, etc

Here's another couple rules that I have found a little hard to follow but generally try to adhere to:

--when solo in remote areas drive a little slower than necessary;

--take breaks often.

The latter will minimize the times you get distracted, which you will if you spend enough time behind the wheel, while the former will help ensure that the rocky step or whatever else you failed to notice because you have been on smooth dirt for a while is nothing more than a rough bump. Having good armor helps with this, too.

That log is still heavy enough to ruin someone's day. You can use a rolled up magazine, newspaper, or even a floor mat. We have started using soft shackles even when attaching to bumpers and roll cages.

Winch!!!
If you have a winch you can really start exploring what the truck can do and figure out what mods make the most sense for your driving style and conditions while learning what to do and what not to do. Just make sure you get one heavy enough, minimum 1.5 times the weight of the vehicle. 6000lb truck=9000lb winch-at minimum.
I personally like to double the weight of the truck, mud is sticky and can really hold on to a vehicle.
Don't forget if your really stuck and the winch isn't getting it done you can double block with a pulley, it's really slow but extremely efficient way of getting some more pulling power.
Go out, get stuck and then you have a good idea what you need to do to keep from getting stuck. Wether that be full lockers and gears front and rear, a lift for taller tires or more suspension flex. Your environment will tell you what you need to do.
A stock truck will get you further than you might think.

Any pulleys you recommend for this?

Honestly no, just be sure it's a snatch style block and can handle double the weight of the winch. Double may be a little extreme but when I'm winching I don't want something to snap and your always fighting more than just the weight of the vehicle.
Put the snatch block on a tree saver attached to something strong enough and run the hook back to a tow point on your bumper. There will be tremendous load doing this so be very careful. I still put my hood up when winching to the front so the hook smashes the hood instead of my face.

I can't make a new thread because I just signed up but I took my sway bar off because it cracked 4 wheeling this wknd. Is it mandatory to take the sway bar links off as well?

Thanks
