Goin' Muddin'

So I've been part of this forum for a while now and it's finally time to get the 4runner dirty. I got a place to go mudding where I'm at now but I have a few questions for you guys and some girls about mudding since it's my first time. How deep of mud can I go through in a stock 2005 4wd? What gear should I take with me, stuff like a chain and shovel? What 4wd should I use, 4hi 4lo and unlocked or locked? Thanks for any replies

I forget the exact number in inches. It equates to about the top of the rim (I said rim, not tire) with the suspension NOT compressed, about like it sits at rest. What gear should I take with me, stuff like a chain and shovel? Yes. Make sure you have proper hardware to attach the 4Runner to the tow vehicle. A good snatch strap is worthless if you can't hook it up. Many don't like chains due to risk of flying links when it breaks. I prefer straps but I also think chains are fine if there's NO snatching/tugging attempted, just a straight, steady pull. If that fails shovel more and repeat. What 4wd should I use, 4hi 4lo and unlocked or locked? 4hi or 4lo depends on the conditions and speed of the terrain. In general you'll probably want 4lo. You want the center diff locked to ensure the VSC doesn't cut the throttle and to get equal power to the F & R axles.
I'd do this first: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/off-ro...r-install.html

When you get home and after you have spent days cleaning/hosing out the engine and the pulleys still sqeak read this: Idler Pulley Problem Solved... - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum

Have fun and

Two things...straps and friends. Everything else is just fluff.

Oh and Jason (see above), don't be such a wimp.

I'm not a big fan of mud. I used to like it, but it gets everywhere and is very hard to clean.

I would definitely have a tow strap, a friend, and a capable recovery vehicle ready.

The type of mud matters too. If it's runny (mostly water) then it's not as bad as the thick stuff that clogs up your tires.

It's hard to tell you which 4x4 system to use because it is based on the situation.

Thanks for all your help guys. Today was the day and I have to say the 4Runner handled better than I though she would. The first time i went through it wasn't bad at all so of course I got cocky and tried to impress the girl I was with. I ran through it a second time and sank to what it felt like to the running boards but she still ran through the mud fine both the second and third time I ran through the mud. I went through the mud a third time because I couldn't leave the right side covered in mud and not the left Pics will hopefully be up soon.

Well I hate to disappoint y'all but I have no way to get the pics from my phone to computer so I have to wait until I go home from college at Thanksgiving to get the pics up.

E-mail the photos to yourself from your phone then you can save them.

Sorry to get off topic here, can't wait to see the pics. Chris, do you know if this pulley issue would carry over to the V8? Because it would appear every time my truck gets muddy or wet, some pulley starts squeaking for a week or two. I wonder if the V8 suffers from the same cheap open-backed pulley?

Sorry that it's taken so long for me to get these up here but I've been busy with studying for my finals and a bunch of other stuff for school. Well here's the only 3 pics I have of this and they're not that great and the 4Runner isn't that muddy because of my stupid running boards and being away from home I have none of my tools with me to take them off. Oh well it was fun for a first time.
