Camp Kitchens and Recipes

When I was on Ih8mud there was a great thread on Camp cooking, recipes, kitchen set ups, etc. Always curious to see how other people do things when on the trail.

I used to do a lot of backpacking, so car camping isn't very gourmet for me yet - I still think freeze dried food as I meal prep, or basic canned goods. But I brought one of my dutch ovens to Death Valley and made up some mac and cheese, chili con carne and a horrific apple cobbler - bourbon played a role in its demise.

Post up some pictures of your set ups, some recipes that are big hits with the family or crew!

Two words - pie iron.

A hot cheese and pepperoni calzone fresh off the campfire just before midnight is the best thing ever. Don't forget the Tums.

If you have an inverter and several hours of driving between campsites, a small crock pot allows you to not only cook gourmet meals on the trail, it lets you do the least amount of dinner prep when you finally do get to the next camp. Only issue is the truck filling with the smell of dinner by about 2pm...

A guy had one of these 12v ovens with him in his tundra - would pull over randomly and put some costco tamales or chicken bakes in and get back on the road http://www.amazon.com/RoadPro-12-Vol.../dp/B00030DLEE
Worked great.

Anyone figure out a burrito box for the engine bay yet? I was building one for my 80 series before I sold it.

I keep it simple yet great meals for our group when camping. I always bring a folding grill top and cast iron pan that goes over our camp fire in the morning and evening. We cook eggs bacon steaks burgers hot dogs and grill our vegetables. All meals are quick and easy over an open wood flame.

I see this thread is a bit old, but I love talking about camp cooking and recipes. It's always fun to see how other people do things when they're on the trail. Personally, I love using my Dutch oven when camping - there's just something about cooking over an open flame that makes everything taste better. And if you're looking for some recipe inspiration, check out https://americasrestaurant.cоm/shelf-life/. They've got some seriously tasty dishes that would be perfect for cooking over a campfire. One thing to keep in mind when camping and cooking, though, is food safety. According to their website, cooked meat can last in the fridge for up to 4 days.

When a buddy and I go hunting, we wrap up large burritos that he makes in several layers of foil and tuck them in next to the exhaust manifold.
