I'd like to hit Edison again before any snow covers it.
Cline OHV is pretty fun too.

Late to the Party
New 4Runner Owner in Bend.
I've wanted one of these since 1st Gen!
2016 TEP - nothing done...yet.
I'm an old guy, I've been stuck in more places off-road than most.
I've had several full-sized Fords and Chevy's, plus an FJ 55 and FJ 40.
I've had my 4R for a week, and I've been a heretic. It's been to work and back!
Plans for self-recovery gear are in the works, but at the moment, I'm 100% stock.
I'd love to experiment with some pumice/mud this weekend if anyone's up for it, and the 2017 trip sounds right up my alley.
(Old guy means I got stuck in Tumalo Reservoir in the 80's when you could 'wheel out there!)
Also, I should add that I have several brewery customers in town who prefer to pay me in beer. So I can provide that!

Did you see the thread I made in the Pacific NW Sub-Section of the forum for off-roading this weekend? Beer is mandatory for you though. LOL]
Post Note-
I'm sorry

Supposed to be good weather...full trip report...before and after the beer... Saturday I'll be watching the Duck/Dawg game.
So I'm thinking Saturday, July 8th - 18th/19th. Gives us the 4th to spend with family. I think June might be too early. Thoughts??? Half of Route 5 from Cali north and then over to the coast??

Proposed dates and proposed routes: Thoughts??
I think June is too early due to the rainfall percentages. We're still at 50% precip throughout most of Oregon. In July, the percentage drops off to <30%.
Also, based on other reports from here and other sites there's still a lot of deadfalls that haven't been cleared and not all of the snow has melted. Also, any later and we might run into an early fire season. Let me know if the following dates would work out for everyone;
Meet Wednesday, July 5th at starting destination through Friday July 14th. That's ten days, which of course includes some cushion days. It also allows us to spend time with family over the 4th and finishing up "last minute" prep.
The other element is which direction and which route? What I would like out of the trip:
- Challenging, rocks and water crossing would be cool...
- Scenery to include the Cascades...
- Elevation...
- Alpine lakes for fishing...
As for the direction I think that depends on the majority decision. Anyway you look at it we all need to either drive there on paved roads to the start or drive on paved roads back. Safety needs to be numero uno! If the majority of the dual sport folks go from south to north then I think we need to respect that. I live about an hour away from Stevenson in SW Wa so obviously it would be convenient for me to start on Route 5, Section 4. I don't want to do this route just for convenience. I would like to include all the elements that we want out of this trip. I'm open to any of the routes.
Here's the link to the routes: Oregon Backcountry Discovery Routes

How many people are you wanting to constitute your group?
Are you planning on any meet and greets prior to departure? I see some people have proposed some get togehters but nothing solid. My experience is that it's an absolutely terrible idea to go "blind" into this and just assume everyone is compatible with your personality, driving style, camping style, etc.
Are you planning on camping every night?
What sort of daily mileages are you wanting to do?
Are you wanting to stop a lot to explore stuff, hike, take pictures, etc., or are you wanting to drive a lot?
What sort of comms do you have and do you expect others to have? CB? Ham? FRS?
Feels like this needs some more planning / info / listed expectations / etc.
I'm vaguely interested. I am not, however, willing to commit to ten days on a route with guys I've never met and without some firm knowledge of what the expectations are.
Side note, I was just in the Cascades (McKenzie Pass area) outside Sisters recently. Beautiful area.

Are you planning on camping every night? - NO, Need to break it up.
What sort of daily mileages are you wanting to do? - RECOMMENDED
Are you wanting to stop a lot to explore stuff, hike, take pictures, etc., or are you wanting to drive a lot? - MOSTLY DRIVING But don't want to regret NOT stopping after it's all over.
What sort of comms do you have and do you expect others to have? CB? Ham? FRS? - CB's between us. I'll have a 2m HAM and CB.

I couldn't agree with you more. Been on a few weekend runs with "folks with different strokes". Great guys but different interests. Wouldn't want to be with them for any length of time. Seemed partying at night was pretty high on their agenda.
Right now it's all in the preliminary stages. As for equipment, there will be at least a few of us with all the recovery gear needed, tools, chain saw, axe, high lift, treds, winch, etc. That can be sorted out later. Not everyone needs that stuff.
Meet and greets are important. Will make plans later on for a few runs or an overnight somewhere.

Cool. Glad to hear it. I'm interested so I'll keep an eyes on the thread.
