If that was for me, I mentioned I'm in Central Utah. Ideas? Suggestions?

I cant tell you the 'best' way to learn...but i can tell you what i did.

i read alot at first, on this board and others, about where to go, what to keep in mind, what you need to pre-check, post-check, what tires to buy, what i could do in stock trim, what i needed to mod for the next level, all those things. i also began checking websites like https://expeditionportal.com/ which talk extensively about off-roading and overlanding. then of course there are several yootuuub'rs out there to give you pointers, lessons, mini classes from the USA, Aussie, and other places where it has a particular lifestyle set.

and then, i just found places to go, where i could get started with and without the aura of embarrassment. I mean, when doing anything new, everybody has to start somewhere...everybody has to be 'The Newbie' at some point...so just go in and get started. Talk to and listen to those who know, learn from them, and get your own tires dirty. Find those places you are allowed to go, and even find some places where you can sneak in a few miles here and there. Soon enough, you'll have some experience with those things that you need to know about...when and how to shift into 4H...when and how to shift into 4L, how to use momentum, how to drive with both feet, picking lines, gauging distance, being wow'd by what your truck can do vs what your bravery is willing to try, etc.

and maybe most importantly, dont overthink it. just get out there, take small steps, and DO-IT...before long, you'll be having the fun that a T4R is made for.

Check out the colorado FJ cruisers club (invite open to all toyotas). The group organizes trail runs that range from easy (stock friendly) to difficult. We encourage new people to join in the fun, especially ones looking to learn. Check out the group on FB.

The best way to learn is to get in the drivers seat and learn on the trail from people with experience.

Common sense has always been an ally but at some point, certain automatic reflexes can cause some bad things to happen if done at inappropriate times....like stabbing the brakes.

I really want to learn what I don't know....but not sure exactly how to go about it. This is more about technique and gaining experience as there are some really great threads on what to have along in terms of preparedness. Thoughts?

I've been offroading for 30 years but still keep my ears open to learn new tips and better ways of handling situations. This is especially important as mechanics and technology changes. I agree that the best ways to learn are to go with experienced people and spend time on trails by some other wheeled mode if only mountain bike. Getting a feel for how physics and momentum effect a moving machine is the only way to know how to react in a emergency situation. I almost endoed my rig when my brother and I picked a bad line off an uneven rock shelf. My brother was out front spotting me and when I saw his face go white I knew I had to react fast. Gut reaction and the locking rear diff saved my rig.

I watched a video recently that I thought was informative and that got me thinking maybe there should be a thread for instructional vids, websites and publication links. If I can't find one I'll start it. I'm sure the community will vet and weed out the misleading stuff. Let me know if this thread exists.

Anyway here is the video. It is aimed towards the Aussie manual geared trucks but still packed with good tips.

This is bad advice! Never go where you aren't supposed to go. STAY THE TRAIL!

One thing Ive noticed in the years Ive been wheeling is, most new wheelers (not all) prefer to go with a small group, they say its less intiminating and more personal. We always wheel in a small group, anything from senic/mild to crazy technical, IMHO its not the trail, but the people you're with that makes it fun.

I am over 60 and just starting to 4-wheel.
Where I live is a playland of offroading. Even our "streets" have terrain obstacles that sometimes require several attempts at different angles.
Just before Thanksgiving I was able to drive some trails with a group. I was the only 4runner, the rest were Jeeps and side by sides.
I went places I wouldn't think to try on my own. I only got "stuck" once, because of my inexperience. Guidance from others got me through under my own power. Several Jeeps behind me had issues in the same spot. (100 feet of basketball sized rocks on a sharp S-curved steep climb)
A group that isn't all yahoos is the best way to learn and gain confidence. Driving around my community (unincorporated rural town) is another.
The spot I got stuck with the group is walking distance to my work.

This is how you learn

Well, I am lifting my 4Rnr this friday, so I thought I'd learn her limits. She is surprisingly capable off road, flexes well, but the low hanging fruit is what gets ya when going through deactivated roadways...

Live and learn!

I believe leaving you rig stock with some slick HT tires and low ground clearance will make you a great driver offroad. If you can get around well in a stock form and not relying on lockers, great tires, lifts bumpers etc. When you do add those things you'll go twice as far as most that started with all the goodies.

Out local off road park offers wheeling 101, 201 and 301 classes.

Never took one since I cut my teeth wheeling with experienced guys.

I sometimes think it still wouldn’t be a bad idea to increase my knowledge and limit potential damage.
