I remember back in 2012 I led a group a pretty large group of FJ Cruisers around the park. Well at least in the morning. Ran the green trail which leads to the sand dunes. Unknown to my knowledge the break overs had substantially eroded and we're pretty rough. Then went up the little rock garden. I was in my stock 99 3rd gen and had no issues but an FJ on 33s behind me busted a cv which pretty much killed the day for the rest of the group. Most went home and others played around in the sand. Activity in the FJ forum in the Midwest came to an end after that.

I also saw a guy in his brand new JKU with a hemi upgrade catch on fire on a hill climb. Apparently he didn't know what the transfer case shifter was for. Kept it in 4H overheated the trans. Trans fluid bubble out and caught on fire when it hit his exhausted headers. Truck was able to be salvaged for the most part. There group was able to winch it out and tow it to the parking lot. I heard the guy limped it back home.

Now when I go I mainly hang out in the quarry and run the river. Orange used to be a good trail but I hear it's becoming over grown.

Sorry for the hiatus. This Covid stuff has had me entirely preoccupied with work and all.

That was my first time at the Badlands so I’d have to reference a map to get the trail names but I lead the first run down an orange trail that you pick up right away on your way to the dunes. Ended up being a little technical but we all made it through. It helped that I trailered a buddy down with his ATV. He worked as a scout for us when we couldn’t tell which way was best. We cleared some other decent trails down a river bed at the back of the dunes in the woods but that got super hairy so we ended up turning around when we saw an old Durango stuck in a pit literally up to his roof line.

Next we went into the quarry and had a friend do the axle basher. I accidentally lead the group out the wrong way thinking it was how we came in. That’s where I teetered on tipping and a friend had to use my traction boards to prevent damage on his unlifted Rebel. Otherwise we played in the dunes, ran the puddles and called it a super successful and fun day. Other than some trail rash and a mildly bent tail pipe on that Rebel, we all drove away unscathed and stoked to get back.

I work in enterprise IT, on the systems engineering side, from March to May it was utter chaos. Now that we've returned (somewhat) to normal, other than working from home full time, I'm desperate to get ANY outside time.

I've been buying random unneeded parts for my little Ninja to get my fix for the last month... before I start buying even more expensive unneeded items for the 4Runner...

Has anyone here done Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail ( TWAT ) ? If so any recommendations for sleeping location? Looks like all camp grounds have been spoken for or are first come first served. Thanks for all the help in advance

I've looked it over a few times, but it seemed like it was almost entirely just dirt roads and paved roads. Am I overlooking things?

That's pretty much it from what I've been told. It isn't an off road trail system. More about scenery.

Yea, as i was checking out the Facebook page it dawned on me that it might be a worthwhile fall type of trip. It doesn't need to be 600 miles of rock crawling, but the graded sandy roads seemed a bit boring. I'll be happy to prove myself wrong though.

I did find this page and downloaded the GPX files. They are really useful for sure. Wife, kid and I will be marking this trip this weekend without much planning. Worst case I think we can find a small hotel if we can’t find a camping spot. Thanks for the help !

Looks like it would be a great fall trip. Maybe we can put something together and all or couple of us can go. I’m using this holiday as a chance to explore things around me. I guess I’ll comeback with pics/ info if we do end up going.

So I really can’t say much about the TWAT since we didn’t make it that far. First day we only did about 300 miles and days two we only got another 400 miles. At that point my wife ( who’s 7 month pregó ) tapped out mind you we also have a 3 yr old. We are located a little south so it’s just over 1k miles for us to get far north. With all that said, it’s pretty much gravel and paved roads as stated in previous posts. Not to knock it it’s a really nice ride and there are some spots that are pic worthy/ fall weather worthy. I would say if you have to time and it’s not to hot go for it. Really nice and relaxing per all.

Nice info here!

I’m not on Facebook. I refuse but I miss out on a lot of groups and gatherings.

I’m trying to put something together with some friends for early August. It may just be the Cliffs since a lot of my friends are street queens and complain about driving to Indiana for the badlands even though they’ve never made the trip.
