Please move me to confirmed! My experience is limited, but my truck has some upgrades (sliders, skids, at tires, suspension upgrade). Looking forward to meeting the group.

Hi guys!

You'll have to excuse my ignorance or oversight but was an actual date confirmed for this? I did not see anything.

Also, safe to assume day 2 will be the harder of the 2 days with day 1 being mostly getting to camp site?

Hey @Bill_B

I believe we will be going Sat-Sun between Christmas and New Years, but will let @carlos.elmotor confirm that.

As far as the trails go... Day 1 will have some fun trails, search "Flagpole Knob VA" or "Union Springs rd VA" in youtube to get an idea. For day 2, search on "big levels VA" or Bald Mountain jeep trail va"

— edit below. @Bill_B just reading through some of your other posts... I’ve seen bone stock 5th gens make it up Flagpole without a problem, and on Big Levels, there’s bypasses for the “interesting “ sections.
Hope you make it out on the trip, it’ll be a fun!

I think I have a wedding that weekend but will double check with the wife tomorrow. I do have a question around the Comms part for future trips, etc.

Sorry not trying to thread jack, I just want to make sure if I can make it I have the necessary equipment whether it's this time or next

Would this cheaper setup work to be able to have the group comms (no external antenna)?
Uv5r:
https://www.amazon.com/BaoFeng-UV-5R...&keywords=uv5r

Battery eliminator:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KZ6VGUW...3EZF8U0E&psc=1

Mic:
https://www.amazon.com/BTECH-QHM22-P...words=uv5r+mic

OR would I be okay just using the Uv5r as a handheld and grabbing an extra battery for backup?

Hey @pDubs
The radio setup you have listed looks ok, the only real difference from what I can see (I'm not a comms expert by any stretch) is that the output power is a bit less which will affect how far you can reach, but in a small group it should work ok. You might want to consider getting the hi gain antenna they have listed in the description or opt for the $30 external antenna, that would prob help a good bit. @carlos.elmotor is way more knowledgeable than myself on this...

As for the license bit... Yeah, a it's "required" to be legal, the test is pretty easy to pass. That said, I've never seen anyone have any problems in the woods that wasn't licensed.

I've never had a CB but my understanding from others is that the range and clarity is a lot better.

Hope you can make it!

Hey thanks for the info. Going to see what my wife's PTO schedule looks like and see how she'd feel about our first winter camping trip lol.

Thanks for the follow up. For standard caravans comms do you think running the 8watt, no external antenna, and the same battery eliminator and mic?

8watt:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MAULSOK...3EZF8U0E&psc=0

Battery eliminator:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KZ6VGUW...3EZF8U0E&psc=1

Mic:
https://www.amazon.com/BTECH-QHM22-P...words=uv5r+mic

It looks like the 8watt's included antenna is better than the 4watt as well. I just want something super simple that I can keep in glove box with the speaker/mic ready to grab out for when I do these type of trips.

I think you’ll get more mileage from that unit, if the included antenna is iffy, there’s probably a larger one floating around in the group you could use for the trip.

The battery on that thing lasts a good while... if you want pick up an antenna and ditch the battery eliminator, I have a spare one you could use. Then you could pick up the eliminator thing later.

Either way, the setup you have listed will get you on the air and should work pretty well...

No worries re: threadjack man - completely fair question. The battery eliminator is worth the investment when you consider the caravan down + 2 days driving. Also beats having to deal with figuring out an onboard battery charging solution that holds the battery in place while you're bouncing around on the trails.

Re: an internal vs. the external antenna
For $10 this NA-771 is far better than the stock antenna. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072M2B9KL..._detail_4?th=1

Having said that, external is far better and around $29 for the parts you need on Amazon.

Worst case, the stock antenna will be mostly good to go unless we're spread out.

Hope that helps

Separately, I still don't have you on the list. Please let me know if you'd like to be "tentative" or "confirmed" (or just on standby).

Hey Bill, no ignorance or oversight on your part at all. We've been coordinating behind the scenes to figure out dates and logistics with core team members before publishing here.

As @gfxcruncher indicated, we're looking at Saturday 29DEC18 for day 1 and Sunday 30DEC18 for day 2. Some of us will be heading down on Friday to Rope off our campsite.

We're still waiting on dates/availability from @4RnR Grl - She may end up leading a caravan down from NOVA on Saturday morning.

Pending her availability, we'll be posting a meet-up location in Harrisonburg for everyone to rally to early Saturday morning.

Hopefully that makes sense and I'll add some of this to the first post in this thread.

Waypoints, meeting times, etc. will follow as we get closer to the date.

Already looking forward to it

Well hope you can make it. It can get chilly at night out there, so definitely pack warm.

A lot of the team has started running one of these in their tents for winter/early spring trips.
