Can attest, it does good work. Not gonna take it with me on this trip though, too much can go wrong in the truck - thinking about putting a hot rock (or two) in an ammo can (insulated on the bottom to prevent it from melting something) and calling it good. That and a 30lb furry bio-heater should do.

Hey team,

Posting our rally point and meet-up time for Saturday, 29DEC18 for folks on the “confirmed list.”
Let’s plan to meet at the below fuel station in Bridgewater at 0930. Please top off your tank as soon as you arrive and grab any last minute snacks, etc. from inside. We’ll be rolling out at 1000 sharp, so please make sure to arrive early enough to make our departure.

211 N Main St, Bridgewater, VA 22812
38.38396, -78.97493

We’ll caravan together from Bridgewater up Union Springs to Meadow Knob, Flagpole Knob and maybe Reddish Knob for a group photo. Lunch will happen at one of these three stops depending our our progress/timing.

After we finish this route we’ll descend into GWNF to set up camp, fire, food, and drinks.

For the second day, Sunday 30DEC18, we’ll break camp and depart for Big Levels at 0930. There’s a scenic route through Staunton, but we’ll probably opt for the faster highway route with a fuel stop back in Bridgewater.

From there we’ll run up Big Levels (South to North) and end our route on the Blue Ridge Parkway. For folks heading North, we’ll take the BRP back to I-81 North and motor back home.

Feel free to post any questions here and we’ll make sure to post up answers so that everyone is feeling confident and well-prepared.

Really looking forward to it - only 12 more days!

Now that we’re under 15 days... starting to get a glimpse of the weather outlook.

Kinda hope the temp drops a little more and maybe we can get some of that white stuff!

How often do Toyota-4runner.org exclusive trips happen every year? I'm trying to get into the off road scene, I love camping and I love my 4runner so I wanna mix the both. Currently riding stock but am planning on changing that. I live in Myrtle Beach so is there any events in NC or SC coming up?

Like @gfxcruncher mentioned in your other thread, look up generaloverland and apexoverland on instagram. They are in your neck of the woods and they are always doing something off-road wise.

Hey @Nmac65
Definitely look up the guys mentioned above, they’re in your neck of the woods, are out pretty frequently and definitely good people.

This trip will hopefully continue to be an annual event, there’s also an annual spring trip that has been put together by @Sleeter in the past. These trips usually don’t happen in NC or SC, they usually happen in VA, WV, and PA...

If you can make it up for this trip, it’s definitely a good time! Tires would be a big plus. That said, I’ve seen a bone stock 5th gen do the day one leg of the trip...

Quick check in here:

I put the tent and awning back on my truck last night and started putting together my gear. I’m officially more excited about the trip than I am about Christmas...

Weather for the general area is looking good, with about a half inch of rain over Thursday and tapering off on Friday. Should make things a little slippery and fun.

Temperatures are looking like a high of 57F on Saturday with a low just above freezing - should make for a good day on Saturday and good temps around the campfire. Sunday is looking good too with a high around 43.

I’ll send a final check in on Wednesday or Thursday for a final headcount for people on the “confirmed” list so we’re not waiting around on Saturday for anyone that had to change plans.

Happy holidays and looking forward to seeing everyone!

Hey @Nmac65 ,

Good to virtually meet you and welcome to the forum. Off-topic, but a fair question...

As E mentioned, reach out to Pete (General Overland) for a great contact in NC. He’s really well tapped into the scene down there.

They do trail cleanup days at Uwharrie NF pretty regularly and advertise via Instagram. That would be a great way to socialize with the broader community further south and get to know some of the key people.

Beyond that, some general advice for getting started wheeling with your daily driver:
Start small and build experience slowly. Breaking your truck in the middle of nowhere or swamping/flooding it in a stanky mud hole is no fun. That is, unless you’re an expert at bush repairs, travel w/ a full kit of tools and commonly broken spare parts *and/or* plan to rag out your rig/just don’t care.

We do a couple of open events each year and post them here in “/off-roading”, so stay tuned and sign up if you’re willing to make the drive up North.

Hope that helps and will hopefully see you in the Spring!

Also, agree that this annual winter trip is fun, but adjusting @gfxcruncher ‘s commentary slightly, this trip requires one of two scenarios: experience or a moderately built truck (or both). Anyone missing one or the other is almost certain to have a bad time and very likely to damage their vehicle.

I agree with the “tires” comment, but would actually recommend that recovery equipment be higher on the list (then tires). Minimally, a quality elastic recovery strap (with closed loop ends), 2-3 quality shackles/soft shackles, and quality recovery points front and rear should probably be on your priority list. Lots of people swear by MaxTrax or equivalent traction boards also.

Lots of arguments/discussion/recommendations elsewhere on the forum re: recovery gear, so I’ll leave it at that for now and hope that it’s helpful.
