I'm right there with you. I have heard that there are some spots in the Santa Cruz mountains near the summit. Other than that I'm not too sure. There are some places in the bay area, but nothing real close.

Only places I know of in the Bay are hollister hills and carnegie. Would like to know more places tho! I'm interested in other places people know of. Me and supra725 might be going up to Tahoe next month if anyone else wants to come..

I haven't been to Carnegie yet, but Hollister is a little played out. I wish I could get up to Tahoe, but can't with the new baby. I will be making some trips up to Pincrest/Sonora area this year. Hoping to find some good trails. Apparently the places up in the Santa Cruz Mountains are pretty good. I was talking to this one guy who did some work on my 4runner and all he ever goes out to is the mountains. I might need to call him up and find out exactly where.

Check these links out for trails and info in the Nor Cal area.

Northern California Off-road Driving Trails and Maps - Places To Ride Offroad 4x4 Trucks and 4WD SUVs

Trails - Mud Sweat and Gears 4x4 Club Sonora, CA

and if you are looking for a more 'park like or OHV place' there is

Prairie City SVRA

I personally have not been to any of them but have been wanting to head up to the mountains and check it out. My buddy has a pretty bulilt up Rover that would also like to go.

I also have the book
Guide to Northern Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails (Book)

it has a ton of trail info and ratings as well as waypoints etc...

If you guys are thinking of doing someting in January please post!

Thanks for the links. Unfortunately I'm on a time frame when wheeling, so most of the spots are a little too far for me. I would be down to get something going in January though.

There is actually a pretty good trail in the Aptos Mountains but it more considered a Mountain Biking Trail. I was reading in the FJ forums that a couple guys did a quick trip up there and the pictures were looking pretty cool. Very easy drive from what i was reading.

Aptos Creek Trail - California | AllTrails.com

Also, we are heading out this weekend and hitting old coast road in Big Sur, Cant wait!!

We post some pictures when we return.

Thanks for the tip, heading to Carmel in a couple weeks and will check this out!

I've heard there are a couple trail-ish roads in the Santa Cruz mountains: 2 of which are Buzzard Lagoon Road and Mt Madonna Road / Summit Road. Buzzard is on my list to check out.

I'm in Santa Cruz and thinking about checking out Buzzard Lagoon. Is it still open to vehicles or only bikes?
