Recovery Gear Refresh - Does my tow strap expire?
I was going through my recovery gear and noticed some of it is quite old (4-7 years)… some used, some new.
Thinking of items like helmets, first aid kits, or even various chemicals like the green tire slime… I know things can either expire or degrade overtime, especially with heat cycles when it just sit in the car 24/7. As an example items like helmets have a recommended service life regardless of how good a condition it’s in. I am replacing almost all chemical and rubber items because I know those can degrade… tire slime, patch kits, air lines and hoses, spare belt.
Would you replace your tow straps on age alone? Does the materials degrade in any way or become brittle which would limit its effectiveness or safety in a hard pull. Really bad things can happen when a winch or strap cable breaks. I don’t mind replacing them, but I also don’t want to toss something if it’s perfectly good.
