Recovery Gear Refresh - Does my tow strap expire?

I was going through my recovery gear and noticed some of it is quite old (4-7 years)… some used, some new.

Thinking of items like helmets, first aid kits, or even various chemicals like the green tire slime… I know things can either expire or degrade overtime, especially with heat cycles when it just sit in the car 24/7. As an example items like helmets have a recommended service life regardless of how good a condition it’s in. I am replacing almost all chemical and rubber items because I know those can degrade… tire slime, patch kits, air lines and hoses, spare belt.

Would you replace your tow straps on age alone? Does the materials degrade in any way or become brittle which would limit its effectiveness or safety in a hard pull. Really bad things can happen when a winch or strap cable breaks. I don’t mind replacing them, but I also don’t want to toss something if it’s perfectly good.

Eh, my vote is a strap will last a few decades as long as there are no abrasions/fraying anywhere.

If it were left out in the sun and discolored/faded I would be worried... but stored away in the vehicle, I see no problem and wouldn't worry about that.

I believe abrasion and UV light would be my biggest concerns.

Aside from being a bit sandy, they have been pretty well taken care of. Stored out of direct sunlight and no damage / frayed bits.

Thanks, I will continue to use them.

If you have discoloration, frays, or melting (stretching). Also if it has been used extensively. Then replace it.

If it doesn't have any of those like other have stated and not stored in the sun then it should be good.
I keep all my recovery gear in a ridged box, so its out of moisture and sunlight.
